We’re looking for 10 individuals to bring their experience and expertise as workers to a new collaboration focused on economic opportunity, a Worker Council.

This is a paid, virtual opportunity with a guaranteed minimum of 5-10 hours/month for 9-12 months at up to $40/hr plus training, benefits, and more. As a Worker-Expert on this Worker Council, you will help collaborate with peers to help improve employment policies and practices. You’ll also receive skill-building workshops and well-being and confidence building sessions, and build a new model for worker voice.

The groups bringing this Worker Council to life are JFF, a national nonprofit focused on workforce development, and Turning Basin Labs, a California-based staffing cooperative. Our goal is to recruit Worker-Experts who are interested in shaping policies and practices among large national or regional employers and brands. We’re hoping you’ll be eager to join us on this journey.

Skills and abilities we are looking for:

    • Curious mind and interested in solving problems.

    • Strong collaborative skills and the ability to work in a team context.

    • A default to deep listening and consideration of other people's ideas and views.

    • An interest in strategic questions affecting workers.

    • A pragmatic outlook and perspective on how workers and employers can collaborate to create more inclusive workplaces.

    • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.

Workers will ideally have some combination of:

    • Experience in frontline, entry-level, or mid-wage professions at large national or regional employers in retail, hospitality, food service, technology, healthcare, and/or manufacturing.

    • A belief that we can work together to create more supportive and equitable working environments.

    • Curiosity about how a company makes decisions that impacts workers and an interest in shaping new ways of working.

    • Comfort with providing feedback to a range of stakeholders (or an interest in practicing doing so).

    • Ability to devote up to 5 hours a week (total 5-10 hours/month) virtually for 9-12 months.

    • Working experience in at least part of the Covid-19 pandemic is a strong preference.

    • Overall, we’re looking for diversity in terms of race and gender identity; educational background; worker classification (both 1099 and W2); geographic location; years of experience; and lived experience (i.e., immigrant, justice-involved background).

    Outcomes of this collaboration:

    • Developing a model of workers influencing employer policies and practices, and developing strategies and building capacity for influencing employer policies.

    • Relationship-building with a robust network of workers, employers, and workforce organizations who are making an impact.

    • Direct engagement with a community of corporations and express their voice on worker issues.

    • Training in a variety of workforce skills and tools to further one’s career.

    • Holistic understanding of the workforce system.

    Pay and benefits:

    • $35-40 an hour (W2) depending on experience

    • Access to optional self-pay and healthcare benefits.

    • Turning Basin Labs training, coaching, and support.

    • Ability to count hours toward cooperative ownership. We estimate you’ll work 60-120 hours on this project, which can be counted towards the 180 hours required for cooperative membership with TBL. If other opportunities arise via TBL, the hours can be accumulated to secure access to a path to ownership in our cooperative.
