                                                              EXTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUMMER 2023

                                                                APPLICATION DEADLINE:  DECEMBER 30, 2022

    The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit invites law students to apply for an externship with the Office of Staff Attorneys, the central legal staff of the court. Externs will be supervised by an experienced staff attorney and will research and analyze legal issues and orally present cases each month to a panel of three judges. Like staff attorneys, externs work for the court as a whole rather than for individual judges and will have the unique experience of explaining to judges the key issues and facts of a case, answering judges' questions, and observing deliberations.

    To be eligible, a student must:

    • be enrolled in good standing at an accredited law school;
    • have completed at least two full semesters of law school by the start of the externship, with a strong preference for completing three full semesters;
    • be able to work 40 hours per week; and
    • not engage in paid legal work during the externship.

    The externship will start in May 2023 and last about 12 weeks (exact start date and length to be determined). Externs may be expected to telework and applicants should be prepared for the possibility of a remote externship.
