    POSITION OVERVIEW:

    The Office of the Circuit Executive (OCE), the administrative arm of the Ninth Circuit, is seeking a highly-motivated student trainee to assist with the administrative modernization initiative, perform organizational review and actively pursue best practices and process optimization.  You will provide lead organizational skills in one key project for the OCE, while also rotating through the various departments, including our Pacific Islands and Legal Support departments which support various groups of Federal Judges and distinguished Bar members.

    The following are representative projects you may work on:

    Supporting the Jury Instructions Committee or another regional Committee for the Ninth Circuit

    Designing and implementing record retention procedures and or asset management procedures in line with the National Administrative Office

    Benchmark with peer agencies and courts to evaluate best practice structures

    Provide support to the Space and Facilities Unit designing new structures for Bench and Bar;

    Assist with the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference and/or the Annual Report

    Design and develop a training program for the OCE on one (or more) areas of process/policy/procedure improvement.

    In addition, the student trainee will spend several days with the Circuit Executive and the Deputy Circuit Executive, understanding the role that Administration and Policy have on the Judiciary at large.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    The successful candidate should possess and display the following characteristics:

    • Student enrolled or recently completed an undergraduate degree;
    • Excellent planning, analytical, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills;
    • Organized and thorough with experience in research and presentation of information;
    • Ability to work well in a team and as an individual contributor.

    All employees, interns and externs in the Judiciary must be a US citizen or a permanent resident in the process of applying for citizenship.  All employees, interns and externs are expected to adhere to the Code of Conduct for Judicial employees.

    INTERNSHIPS AT THE NINTH CIRCUIT

    Our summer internship program runs for ten to twelve weeks from June 2019-August 2019.  We start interviewing in April and continue a rolling basis.  We accept online applications but prioritize early submissions. Each internship project is assigned to a department head who will review your qualifications.  While each intern rotates through all departments, your lead project will be based on your qualifications and our most immediate needs. Interns must be available to work a minimum of 15-20 hours per week, start and end dates are flexible.

    Our Ninth Circuit interns and student trainees have the opportunity to work alongside some of the most talented minds in the Judiciary--judges, lawyers, and administrative personnel--and participate in courtroom support, trainings, receptions, mentorships, networking with leadership and more.

    OCE interns and student trainees will have assigned desk space, a desktop computer, phone and email account from which to work.  Work is performed in an office setting and may occur at off-site meeting locations or temporary duty stations.  Travel may be required and will be reimbursed.  Transit subsidies are available.

    The Office of the Circuit Executive is committed to providing professional support to the Judicial Council and courts of the Ninth Circuit, and to ensuring the highest level of public trust in the administration of justice. This support includes identifying needs; conducting studies; proactively developing and implementing innovative policies; providing training, public information and human resources support; coordinating building and automation projects; and advising the Judicial Council on procedural and ethical matters.
