    UCSF/UC HASTINGS CONSORTIUM ON LAW, SCIENCE & HEALTH POLICY

    Classification: Level 1 / Class Code 2038 / Full-Time / Exempt / Benefited

    Hiring Salary Rate: $55,000 - $65,000 annually (commensurate with qualifications) 

    THE ROLE

    The Graduate Fellow is an integral staff member of the Consortium, providing both project-based and core programmatic support. The Graduate Fellow position is funded through a mix of hard and soft (grant) funding streams, and is a year-long contract position, subject to renewal based on available funding. The successful candidate will have excellent legal research, writing and advocacy skills as well as fluency in the day to day needs of academic programs/nonprofits. S/he will be a warm, friendly, and people-oriented self-starter with excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills; have a desire to learn; and have the ability to prioritize assignments and produce output effectively and efficiently. The Graduate Fellow should be comfortable working in a small firm environment--both independently and as part of a team--and have the organizational skills and judgment necessary to establish priorities and meet multiple deadlines while managing different kinds of projects and responsibilities simultaneously.  The Graduate Fellow is generally supervised by the Executive Director of the Consortium but will be subject to additional supervision and mentorship of other Consortium faculty and staff, as may be required for a particular project or task.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    GRANT PROJECT WORK

    LEGAL RESEARCH & ADVOCACY

    • The Graduate Fellow will also support the Consortium's grant-funded projects, which include work on the Source and the Medical-Legal Partnership for Seniors. The Graduate Fellow will be expected to work closely with and report regularly to the managing faculty/attorneys of each project.

    LEGAL & POLICY RESEARCH (SOURCE)

    • Track, summarize, and analyze data on legislation and litigation;
    • Draft, edit, and track research projects, including but not limited to white papers, academic publications, law reviews, blog posts, website updates, and presentations;
    • Participate actively in all research-related meetings;
    • Clearly and concisely explain research findings to foundations and policymakers to identify opportunities for improvement in health law & policy at the state and federal level.

    LEGAL ADVOCACY (MEDICAL-LEGAL PARTNERSHIP FOR SENIORS)

    • Provide direct legal consultation and representation to clients, under the supervision of managing faculty/attorneys
    • Assist in education and outreach to law students, healthcare providers, client communities, and others to educate them about legal rights and resources
    • Assist in data collection as required by grant funders
    • Assist in grant writing, as may be needed to sustain projects

    CORE PROGRAM SUPPORT

    EVENTS & COMMUNICATIONS

    • Assisting the Executive Director and Program Manager with Consortium events including room reservations, catering, Facilities and Media Services set up, security co-ordination, clean up, list serve updates, and follow ups with key stakeholders where appropriate, publicizes event across all appropriate Consortium channels, tracks attendance, and makes updates to event materials and arrangements as necessary;
    • Assisting the Executive Director and Program Manager with outreach and Communications activities, including drafting and distributing correspondences and program materials using MyHastings, Canvas, MailChimp, Microsoft Outlook, the Consortium website and social media.
    • Supporting outreach and communications for specific academic programs of the Consortium, such as the JD Concentration and the Medical-Legal Partnership for Seniors

        CONSORTIUM ORGANIZATION

    • Assisting with management of the Consortium's office space;
    • Maintaining or updating databases i.e. advising database, health law firms database, organizing and maintaining online records and databases, primarily using Box;
    • Miscellaneous administrative duties as necessary to assist with the smooth functioning of the Consortium and its numerous programs; including in-person-availability to bridge and strengthen communication across different programs and other duties as assigned

    REQUIREMENTS

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    • J.D. Required
    • Experience in health law and/or policy
    • Experience providing core support and coordination in an academic, nonprofit, or small firm environment.
    • Experience providing legal services to vulnerable populations
    • Requires a high degree of individual initiative, discretion, diplomacy and mature judgment;
    • Must be a self-starter with demonstrated dependability and must also work well as a team member.

     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

    • Excellent verbal and writing skills, with high attention to detail, accuracy, and presentation quality;
    • Excellent administrative and office support skills; ability to move and learn quickly in a fast-paced environment and meet multiple deadlines effectively with good judgment with respect to project prioritization and time management; must be punctual;
    • Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills; professionalism and collaborative spirit in working across departments and with Consortium faculty, students, and staff; ability to be positive and supportive in interactions with others;
    • Proven ability to work effectively both independently and as a team player;
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite of Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; familiarity with social media tools; comfort with using or learning a variety of online tools such as Box, Doodle Polls, MailChimp, and Ad Astra.
