    CLASSIFICATION: Level 4 / Class Code 6111 / Part-Time (25%) / Exempt / Benefited

    HIRING SALARY RANGE: $20,000 - 25,000 (based on a full-time rate range of $80,000 - 100,000)

    THE ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    The ombudsperson provides impartial conflict resolution services to all members of the UC Hastings campus community. Conflict resolution services include consultation, negotiation, mediation and problem solving. The ombudsperson may receive a wide range of complaints from faculty, students, staff, and administrators. They are expected to exercise judgement in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria to facilitate equitable resolutions that are mutually satisfactory to all parties of a conflict.

    Typical duties and responsibilities consist of, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Utilizes best practices for mediation and resolution of complex issues.
    • Conducts confidential, neutral, and independent informal inquiries of a wide range of complaints.
    • Works with all departments and constituencies to clarify issues and explain options available for the resolution of complaints. Recommends steps towards problem resolution and appropriate action.
    • Assists units to identify and resolve concerns and problems by conducting fact finding reviews.
    • Establishes operations, consistent with professional ombuds practice, and adheres to The International Ombudsman Association Standards of Practice and Codes of Ethics.
    • Serves as a campus consultant for senior officials who are formulating policies and procedures.
    • Develops and conducts training sessions and information sessions for the campus community about the ombuds role in conflict resolution.
    • Develops and maintains publications that inform the campus community about the ombuds services.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    REQUIREMENTS

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    • Bachelor's degree required
    • At least 3 years of experience as an organizational ombuds, a professional mediator, conflict resolution specialist, organizational development professional, or other similar role.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

    • Knowledge of the nature of conflict and conflict resolution and mediation techniques and principles;
    • Expect conflict resolution and mediation skills and skills in developing effective options for conflict resolution;
    • Knowledge of the appropriate role of the Ombuds, the code of ethics, and the standards of practice;
    • Expert interpersonal communication skills to work effectively with a broad range of divers populations within a complex and multi-layered organization;
    • Skills in research assessment, critical thinking, and problem-solving;
    • Ability to understand the gravity and impact that various issues may have on a public institution, internally and externally;
    • Ability to work collaboratively to build and sustain highly effective and positive relationships at all organizational levels in order to promote systemic change
    • Ability and willingness to travel to the annual Ellucian Conference, as necessary.
