CLASSIFICATION: Class Code 2051 / Exempt / Full-Time / Benefited
HIRING SALARY RANGE: $66,000 – $70,000 (commensurate with qualifications)
THE ROLE
The UC Hastings Community Justice Clinics' Individual Representation (IR) Clinic seeks applications for an opening as its Staff Attorney (a/k/a Lawyering Fellow). This rotating position is designed for recent UC Hastings graduates (graduation year of 2015-2020), who are former students in the Individual Representation (IR) Clinic or have other equivalent substantive lawyering experience.
The Staff Attorney must be a member of the California Bar. The initial term is contemplated to begin in May 2021 and continue for two years (contingent on successful completion of 6-month probationary period). If mutually desired, the contract may be renewed for an additional year.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Staff Attorney will perform a wide range of lawyering activities. They will represent clients in all of the IR Clinic's substantive legal practice areas (Social Security disability, wage and hour, unemployment, and clean slate), as well as other areas in which IR clients may need legal assistance. In addition to managing their own case load, the attorney will also be responsible for interacting with referral agencies and interviewing potential clients, reviewing case files of potential clients, assisting in clinic cases during the semester and handling them after the semester, drafting and updating student training materials, assisting in workshops and trainings for students, and conducting legal research.
