    BAR ACCOMMODATIONS SPECIALIST

    Disability Resource Program (DRP)

    Classification: Class Code 1718 / Level 2 / Part-Time (0.5 FTE) / Non-Exempt

    Hiring Salary Rate : $37 / hour

    THE ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Under the supervision of the Director of the Disability Resource Program and in close collaboration with the Director of Bar Passage Support, the Bar Accommodations Specialist is devoted to helping current students and recent graduates seek and obtain reasonable accommodations on the bar exam, the professional licensing exam for attorneys.

    Typical duties and responsibilities consist of, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Supporting students in understanding the timeline and process involved in requesting accommodations on the bar exam across multiple jurisdictions, but with an emphasis on the California bar exam.
    • Reaching out to students via email and phone to schedule meetings (multiple attempts to reach student may be needed).
    • Assessing sufficiency of student documentation to meet State Bar of California requirements.
    • Meeting with students to advise on initial petition for bar accommodations strategy (e.g., whether they need updated documentation, identifying such additional documentation).
    • Reviewing students' narratives and offering substantive recommendations/edits.
    • Guiding and advising students in appeals processes when their requests for accommodations have been denied in whole or in part.
    • Writing letters of support on appeal using legal arguments and citing to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) & Department of Justice (DOJ) regulations.
    • Tracking student data vis-à-vis bar accommodations petition and appeals process.
    • Additional duties as assigned.

    REQUIREMENTS
    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    • Bachelor's degree (required).
    • At least two years proven experience supporting graduate students seeking and obtaining accommodations for disability on licensing exam(s), including supporting applicants through the appeals process (strongly preferred).

    DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

    • Working knowledge of Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act regulations.
    • Strong knowledge base of ADA definition of disability and rules of construction, and DOJ regulations regarding definition of disability and testing entities
    • Strong computer skills.
    • Ability to organize and manage large amounts of data effectively and accurately.
    • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively.
    • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
    • Ability to work with minimal supervision and manage multiple assignments at once.
    • Project management.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
