    POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER - BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

    JOB DESCRIPTION:

An NSF-funded postdoctoral position is available in the Howarth laboratory at St. John's University in the evo-devo project: "Honeysuckle phylogenomics and the evolution of organ fusion (Lonicera, Caprifoliaceae)." This project is in collaboration with Wendy Clement (The College of NJ) and Michael Donoghue (Yale University). Fusion of parts has resulted in major evolutionary innovations across plants and yet the genetic basis of fusion has only been studied in a few model plants. This project will entail gene expression analyses of CUC/NAM genes and other candidate genes that may have been involved in fusion in honeysuckles. The researcher will also work closely with Pis Clement and Donoghue examining Lonicera systematics and building an atlas of fusion characters across the entire clade. Strong candidates will have a Ph.D. in developmental biology, plant biology, evolution, or related fields, and have demonstrated experience with standard molecular biology techniques. Candidates must have experience with or an enthusiastic willingness to learn developmental techniques, especially in situ hybridization.

    RESPONSIBILITY:

    • Examine evo-devo of important floral transcription factors following the whole genome duplication event predating the core eudicots
    • Examine evo-devo of genes that underlie fusion in honeysuckles
    • Utilize bioinformatic and gene expression tools to assay floral evolution

    SKILLS:

Evolutionary and developmental biology research skills, including qPCR, in situ hybridization, and use of bioinformatic software.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

PhD in Evolution, Development, Plant Biology, or related field is required.
