Position Summary: The Subject Matter Expert (Joint Special Operations) supports the development, planning, coordination, and execution of Mission Command Exercises designed to train Special Operations Forces headquarters and staff. The position provides expertise in joint operations, operational planning, theater-level Special Operations activities, and Joint Special Operations Task Force operations. The Subject Matter Expert assists with realistic scenario development, exercise execution, and training integration to ensure effective collective training outcomes. This role contributes directly to mission readiness by helping leaders and staff rehearse and refine operational decision-making in complex special operations environments.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Support planning, development, coordination, and execution of Mission Command Exercises.
• Develop realistic Joint Special Operations scenarios supporting training objectives.
• Integrate theater-level and Joint Special Operations considerations into exercise design.
• Provide expertise regarding Joint Special Operations Task Force operations and headquarters functions.
• Assist with training audience preparation and operational problem development.
• Participate in exercise development, scripting, and execution activities.
• Support operational planning activities and staff training requirements.
• Advise Mission Command Exercise personnel on Special Operations operational concepts.
• Contribute to scenario realism by incorporating strategic, operational, and intelligence considerations.
• Assist in after-action reviews and exercise improvement efforts.
• Support collective training activities conducted by the Special Operations Mission Training Center.
Required Qualifications:
• Education: Bachelor's degree.
• Must be a graduate of one of the following:
o United States Army Special Forces Officer Qualifying Course; or
o United States Army Military Information Support Operations Officer Qualifying Course; or
o United States Army Civil Affairs Officer Qualifying Course; or
o United States Army Military Intelligence Officer Basic Leader Course; or
o Equivalent course from another military service.
• Additionally, the candidate must be a graduate of:
o A United States military intermediate-level service school; or
o A United States military senior-level service school.
• Experience: Minimum two years of experience serving in Special Operations Forces headquarters staff positions performing joint operations.
• Minimum one year of experience researching, planning, preparing, coordinating, and executing Mission Command Exercises focused on Theater Special Operations Command or Joint Special Operations Task Force scenarios.
• Graduate of Joint Forces Staff College programs such as:
o Joint and Combined Warfighting School (Joint Professional Military Education Phase II)
o Joint Advanced Warfighting School
o Joint, Interagency, and Multinational Planner's Course
• Clearance: Active Secret Security Clearance
Graduate of one or more Joint Special Operations University courses or equivalent including:
o Irregular Warfare Applied Intelligence Course
o Joint Civil-Military Operations Campaign Planning Workshop
o Special Operations Forces Resource Management Course
o Irregular Warfare Advanced Course
o Strategic-level military theory
o National Security Strategy
o National Military Strategy
o Joint Operating Environment
o Operational plans and campaigns
o Intelligence support to irregular warfare
o Intelligence support to unconventional warfare
o Unconventional warfare campaign planning
o Intelligence systems acquisition capabilities
o Maintain a Secret security clearance throughout performance.
• Comply with National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual requirements.
• Complete Threat Awareness and Reporting Program training.
• Complete Anti-Terrorism Level I Awareness Training.
• Complete Operations Security Awareness Training.
• Complete Department of Defense Cyber Awareness Training when required.
• Meet installation access and identity verification requirements.
• Comply with Government force protection, security, and information protection requirements.
• Demonstrate professional communication and coordination skills necessary to interact with Headquarters staff personnel, Special Operations Forces units, Government personnel, and contractors.
• Ability to sit, stand, and work for extended periods.
• Ability to participate in long-duration planning sessions and training events.
• Ability to work within exercise-control, classroom, operations center, and staff-training environments.
• Ability to travel in support of mission requirements.
• Ability to operate Government-provided computer systems and training support platforms.
Physical Demands and Work Environment: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk, listen, and write. The employee frequently is required to use foot/ankle motions, hands or fingers, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is required to stand, walk, sit; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
