The National Wildlife Health Center (NWHC) provides diagnostic services to the Department of the Interior (DOI) and other natural resource agencies, conducts epidemiological investigations and surveillance, conducts laboratory and field research on wildlife health and disease, and disseminates data and information to natural resource managers. The NWHC operates facilities in Madison, Wisconsin which include biological containment areas for conducting laboratory and animal studies with infectious agents. The biological containment areas are complex to operate and maintain, and must meet regulations established for working safely with infectious agents. The facility operations specialist for NWHC works with the Science Support Branch Chief to facilitate contractors, design, improvement, maintenance and janitorial care to NWHC facilities. Work includes new construction and rehabilitation as well as general preventive and cyclical maintenance to all physical structures and buildings, mechanical systems, laboratories (including a vivarium), heating and air conditioning systems, electrical systems, building automation system, utilities, roads, vehicles, walkways, parking areas, plumbing, water treatment systems, physical security, and fire protection systems needed to support diagnostic services and research conducted at the NWHC. -Manage new construction & rehabilitation as well as preventative & cyclical maintenance at a biomedical facility. -Investigate & evaluate the design and construction of biological containment areas and support systems at a biomedical facility. -Manage planning/design modifications to or rehabilitation of buildings, grounds and equipment. -Develop annual and long range repair and preventative maintenance plans for buildings and equipment.
