Position Summary
The Durham VA Medical Center is seeking a skilled and patient-focused Ultrasound Technologist to perform abdominal and small parts diagnostic ultrasound examinations for our Veteran population. This role is strictly limited to non-OB/GYN imaging, supporting high-quality diagnostic services while ensuring patient safety, comfort, and accuracy. Coverage may include day, night, weekend, and holiday shifts based on departmental needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform diagnostic abdominal and small parts ultrasound examinations, including but not limited to liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, spleen, thyroid, testicular, and soft tissue studies
- Verify patient identity, review clinical history, and ensure exam appropriateness prior to scanning
- Obtain high-quality images and cine loops for interpretation by radiologists and providers
- Explain procedures clearly and provide respectful, patient-centered care
- Operate and maintain ultrasound equipment according to safety and performance standards
- Recognize normal and abnormal anatomy and appropriately document observations
- Accurately document examinations and patient information in the electronic medical record (EMR)
- Collaborate with radiologists, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure timely and accurate diagnostic results
- Adhere to infection control, patient privacy, and ultrasound safety standards
- Participate in quality assurance activities and routine equipment checks
- Comply with VA policies, Joint Commission standards, and federal regulations
- Provide coverage for day, night, weekend, and holiday shifts as required
Note: This position does not include OB/GYN or obstetric ultrasound examinations.
Required Qualifications
- ARDMS Certification in Abdomen (AB) – required
- Graduate of an accredited diagnostic medical sonography program
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Demonstrated expertise in abdominal and small parts ultrasound imaging
- Strong knowledge of anatomy, pathology, and scanning techniques related to assigned studies
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team
- Excellent communication and patient care skills
Preferred Qualifications
- ARDMS Small Parts (SP) certification
- Prior experience performing abdominal and small parts ultrasound in a hospital or acute-care setting
- Experience working with Veterans or in a federal healthcare environment
- Familiarity with VA electronic health record systems (CPRS/VistA preferred)
Physical & Work Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
- Ability to lift, move, and position patients with or without reasonable accommodation
- Manual dexterity for prolonged transducer use and precise image acquisition
- Work in a clinical environment with exposure to bodily fluids and medical equipment
