    PHEAA is seeking a Software Engineer to join their team. This role performs application administration, database administration and upgrade support for PHEAA’s various enterprise commercial software.  The initial responsibilities will be working with PHEAAs Peoplesoft Financial and HCM (Human Capital Management) software and Verint CRM (Customer Resource Management) software.

     

     

    SHIFT: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

    SALARY: Commensurate with Experience

     

    Job Responsibilities

     

    APPLICATION ADMINISTRATION

    • Participate in the planning and coordination of software installations, patches, hot fixes, and maintenance for complex Linux and/or Windows based Third party applications.
    • Work with vendors, system administrators, developers and other departments within PHEAA to support and complete a variety of tasks (e.g. design system configurations, correct system problems etc.) across various test and production systems.
    • Integrate commercial systems with internal systems.
    • Enforce the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) controls for standardized secure installation and maintenance of computer software and hardware.
    • Work with various proprietary administration tools to handle database modifications and application configurations.
    • Promote software customizations through the various test, quality assurance and production systems.

     

    DATABASE ADMINISTRATION

    • Create and schedule database maintenance scripts for PHEAA’s commercial software (e.g. backup/recovery, reorgs, and run stats for DB2 and SQL Server).

    • Continual support for PHEAA’s disaster recovery plan.

    • Support IBM DB2 LUW, and SQL Server database structures.

    • Monitor database performance and use the information to improve the system.

     

    RESEARCH

    • Work with Linux and Windows administrators, middleware, and other IT professionals to trouble shoot system problems, and provide performance tuning and capacity planning.

    • Extensive research (e.g. trouble shoot issues, monitor vendors for releases of maintenance, service packs, and upgrades, remain current on new technology) using internet, vendors, and coworkers.

    • Use system logs and various performance tools to debug applications, database corruption, and database performance issues.

    • Provide weekly status updates, time reporting, and participate in team meetings.

    • Responsible for documentation, tracking, controlling, & prioritizing open projects.

    • Other duties as assigned.

    Required Skills

     

    • Bachelor degree in IT related field and two to four years of experience in an application administration role or an equivalent combination of experience and training/certification.
    • Effective communication skills necessary to make yourself understood when speaking about complex technical subjects.
    • Experience working with Microsoft SQL Server DBMS.
    • Solid knowledge and concepts of purchased commercial systems – maintenance, upgrades and customizations.
    • Understand client/server and web architectures.
    • Understand concepts, characteristics, and capabilities of information technology hardware, software and networks.
    • Solid documentation skills.
    • Comfortable working in the Linux operating system
    • Proficiency reading and understanding various shell scripting languages
    • Experience debugging with Java logs
    • Physical Requirements - This position requires participation in a 24x7x365 on-call rotation.  The frequency of the rotation depends on the number of members in the team.  On-call requires carrying a cell-phone and responding to calls within the agreed upon timeframe set within PHEAA’s standards.  Internet connectivity from home is required as part of the on-call rotation. 
    • If selected for a position, following a conditional job offer, all candidates for employment must be able to pass a criminal background check which are not an automatic bar to employment, a student loan check where all loans must be in good standing, and provide proof of education. Candidates for this position would need to obtain the Public Trust security clearance. FOR THIS LEVEL OF CLEARANCE, THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS A REQUIREMENT THAT ALL APPLICANTS POSSESS U.S. CITIZENSHIP.
