    SALARY: $15 an hour

     

    NEA is seeking individuals interested in participating in the NEA Winter/Spring 2020 internship session, which will begin on January 14, 2020 and will end on or before May 29, 2020. Interns who receive a stipend may intern up to a maximum of twenty (20) hours a week.

     

    The NEA Internship Program provides interns with training, learning opportunities, and educational experiences through a variety of rich and substantive programmatic experiences that support quality public education. These experiences may include conducting research; data analysis; writing, editing, using Internet applications and social media; participating in and assisting with meetings and policy forums; visits to Capitol Hill; and other appropriate program-related activities. The internships range from six weeks to a full semester.

     

    POSITION SUMMARY

    The NEA partners with institutions of higher education and other organizations to identify interns - generally juniors, seniors, recent college graduates (up to 18 months) or graduate students - who are interested in public education policy and education issues. Students pursuing degrees in Political Science, Government, Public Policy, Education and related disciplines are encouraged to apply.

     

    POSITION EMPHASIS: This position supports NEA’s strategic objective to focus the energy and resources of its 3 million members toward the promotion of public education by participating in internship opportunities in Campaigns and Elections, with a focus on Member Engagement, Mobilizing and Activism and 2020 Presidential Elections.

     

     

    DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED INTERN ASSIGNMENT(S): 

    As part of the learning experience, interns will join a team of campaign and election specialists, data analysts, writers, web specialists, political fundraisers, field organizers, administrative professionals, and managers who develop and implement campaign strategies both at headquarters and in conjunction with state affiliates, community organizations, coalitions and partners.

     

    Interns will work with staff on projects that assist NEA members, governance, affiliate staff, on federal legislative activity impacting educators and public education priorities. Assignments will vary, and may include, but are not limited to member engagement and social medial work; Presidential Election 2020 mobilizing activities, organizing with on-line Strong Public Schools. Develop and implement strategies to advance education candidates in political, legislative, and other state and national campaigns.

     

    Interns will also have opportunities to work with staff on political, issue-advocacy, grassroots, and fundraising projects, as well as communication strategies, ballot measures and legislative crises. Additionally, interns will be able to participate in a various conferences, events, lobbying activities and projects.

     

    EXPECTED SKILLS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR DEVELOPMENT THAT THE INTERN MAY OBTAIN FROM THIS EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE. 

    Interns will have the opportunity to obtain knowledge of 2020 Presidential Elections Priorities and PAC funds, and develop skills in member activism, civic engagement. Interns will also develop understanding of/skills in data and targeting, strategic operations, analysis of polls, 2020 Trifecta, state races, and ballot initiatives.
