    NEA seeks a Controller in its Business and Financial Services department. The Controller serves as a member of the management team of the Office of the Chief Financial Officer. The Controller ensures compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations and NEA policies. The Controller provides leadership and supervision of assigned staff, oversight of the accounting department functions, and is a direct contributor to the daily work flow and operations of the accounting department.

     

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Oversees all aspects of financial accounting including recording and reporting revenue, expenditures, assets, and liabilities for NEA and its related entities. • Ensures the accurate and timely processing of all accounting transactions and compliance with federal and state regulations, NEA policies, and generally accepted accounting practices. • Assists with the development, implementation, monitoring, and revision of policies and procedures relating to the accounting and business functions. • Plans and implements new operating procedures and information technology advances to improve service quality and efficiency of service delivery. • Directs and supervises the collection of dues receivable from affiliates and monitors compliance with dues remittance agreements and NEA policies. • Maintains orderly accounting records, accounting policies and procedures, chart of accounts, and a system of controls over accounting transactions. • Issues timely and complete financial and statistical statements and reports for internal and external users including governance, senior management, and regulatory agencies. • Acts as the primary liaison with independent auditors, coordinates the annual independent financial audit, prepares or oversees the preparation of various schedules and the gathering of information required for the audit. • Conducts special projects and studies to support the decision-making needs of NEA, as assigned. • Coordinates the development and implementation of an operational plan and budget for the Accounting Department. • Produces appropriate reports to communicate NEA’s financial performance, including independent auditor report and proposed budget to the representative assembly. • Develops benchmarks against which to measure the performance of the accounting department, monitors performance against those benchmarks, and develops plans of action for improvement based on the assessment of performance. • Designs and implements training for users of the NEA financial system. • Manages NEA’s fixed asset inventory control process, including implementing and monitoring the labeling, tracking, recordkeeping (including calculating and tracking annual and accumulated depreciation), and disposal of assets. • Performs other duties as assigned.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, with a concentration in accounting or business administration. (Master’s degree preferred). • Certified Public Accountant License. • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible management experience in the business office functional area. • A strong commitment to the mission of NEA. • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting principles, including not for profit accounting, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, and internal controls for the safeguard of assets. • Demonstrated experience in organizing, conceptualizing, and prioritizing objectives and managing a high-volume workflow office. • Demonstrated excellent supervisory, administrative, communication, interpersonal and leadership skills. • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with NEA and affiliate leaders and staff. • Demonstrated organizational skills in handling, directing and prioritizing multiple and complex assignments and projects. • Skill in working effectively in a team environment with a customer service focus. • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions; and effectively present information to senior management.
