    POSITION EMPHASIS: The position supports the NEA's strategic objective to focus the energy and resources of its 3 million members toward the promotion of public education by providing high level administrative support to the department of Human Resources.

     

    POSITION SUMMARY: The essential functions of this position involve providing the full range of technical, program, financial, administrative and reception support to the Human Resources department. The incumbent provides administrative support to a high level executive and assists with calendaring and scheduling. The incumbent serves as the initial point of contact for the Human Resources department with responsibility for accurate, prompt, and customer-oriented screening and referral of visitors and inquiries. The incumbent assists in the logistical planning of HR hosted events, training and staff meetings. The incumbent provides direct assistance to the Manager for Workforce and Professional Development in addition to the Senior Director. Other responsibilities include processing vouchers, travel expenses and vendor payments, ordering office supplies, monitoring the HR Service Center e-mail account, and participating in collaborative work efforts that enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the department. To carry out responsibilities, the incumbent uses a personal computer and associated software.

    Required Skills

     

    MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Associate of Arts degree or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills may be acquired. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Three years of progressively responsible experience performing a full-range of office and customer service support, that must include support to a high level executive or manager; using a personal computer for word processing, processing vouchers, using electronic communications and online research; composing, editing and proofreading documents; and compiling, analyzing, and reporting information. Experience performing a full-range of technical, paraprofessional, and administrative support activities, preferably in human resources (employee relations, employment, classification, and benefits administration). OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Experience using Microsoft Office to prepare presentation materials. Must be able to occasionally work extended hours on evenings and weekends. Work samples (e.g., presentation and other materials prepared) may be requested at the time of interview.

    Required Experience

     

    SELECTION CRITERIA: TIER 1 (ESSENTIAL): Proven excellent customer relations skills and demonstrated ability to interact and communicate with all levels of staff. Demonstrated skill and experience in using financial management systems (preferably PeopleSoft). Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion. Sound analytical skills. Demonstrated experience in working independently and in handling multiple assignments simultaneously with continuous work interruptions. Demonstrated use of sound judgment for decision-making in setting priorities, organizing work, and following through with minimal supervision. Successful references. TIER 2 (SIGNIFICANT): Experience managing calendars and schedules. Experience coordinating conferences and meeting logistics (e.g., catering/AV equipment/room set-up). Experience with online administrative systems. TIER 3 (DESIRABLE): Demonstrated experience using technology or processes to improve efficiency and effectiveness of work and office operations. Knowledge of mission and programs of the National Education Association and the strategic role of the Human Resources department.
