    The purpose of the apprentice program is to provide entry- to journey-level skills in the technical, vocational, and trades occupations using a combination of structured on-the-job training, related classroom instruction, and home study.  Under immediate supervision, the incumbent may perform unskilled and semi-skilled work in assisting and supporting craft and trade personnel in the construction, maintenance, repair, and servicing of District systems, facilities, vehicles, and equipment; and performs related duties, as assigned.

     

    This position will be assigned to Electrical Services with the goal of advancing to Controls Technician.  You will learn on-the-job under the supervision of a journeyperson, while working for EMWD.  You will also attend related instruction classes at an approved training site. The duration of the program is four (4) years.  Apprentices will be considered “at-will” employees, and agree to continue employment with the District for a minimum of 12 months after receiving formal training courses or repay the District for the costs incurred for formal classroom training on a pro-rated basis, except in the event of a non-voluntary separation.

     

    Current EMWD employees who have previously completed initial probation will be subject to the terms and conditions of this agreement if they opt to participate in the Apprentice Program.  Within 90 days of entering the apprenticeship program, a current EMWD employee will, at the employee’s option or when an employee does not successfully demonstrate the ability to meet the District’s required minimum performance standards, be returned to his previously held classification or a classification at the same salary range, at the same step he held before entering apprentice program

    • Oral Interview, 40%

    TOTAL:                      100%   (MINIMUM PASSING SCORE IS 70%)

    Required Skills

    Knowledge of: 

    • Methods, techniques, tools, and equipment common to the building and/or public works construction fields.
    • Shop mathematics.
    • District and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
    • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and District staff.
    • The structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
    • Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed.

     

    Ability to: 

    • Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools used in the work.
    • Accurately read meters, gauges, valve books, blueprints, and schematic drawings.
    • Maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed.
    • Follow and apply written and oral work instructions.
    • Effectively use computer systems, software applications relevant to work performed, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.
    • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax.
    • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

    Required Experience

    Any combination of experience and education that provides the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying, along with the specific licenses/certifications as outlined below:

    EXPERIENCE: 

    • No prior experience is required.

     

    EDUCATION: 

    • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.

     

     

    LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS: 

    • A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's Vehicle Insurance Policy.
