  • Responsibilities

As a Direct Support Professional (DSP) you will be assisting a developmentally disabled adult within a household that houses two adults with developmental disabilities. This creates opportunities to work with another individual if you cannot work with your primary client.

This is a pet-friendly home and houses multiple cats and one service dog. Everyone entering and leaving needs to be cautious about making sure the doors are kept closed.

Responsibilities include: supporting daily living activities in the home and community; shopping, cooking, and providing transportation and support to and from doctor appointments; bathing and other hygiene duties; following instructions regarding home cleaning and laundry; administering medication and monitoring the individual taking the medication; completing and posting a shift report that describes in detail what happens on the shift; reporting wrongdoing or mistreatment of an individual.

Disability Specifics: both adults have speech and hearing disabilities. One only communicates through ASL or typed English--primarily through text messages. They need providers who are able and willing to learn and use at least basic American Sign Language (ASL) in order to communicate when they can't type. One client needs support for 8 hours a day from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. The other client needs support for 16 hours a day from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm--this is broken up into morning and evening shifts depending on staff availability.

Additional Information: This household is completely Fragrance-Free due to multiple housemates being chemically sensitive. Everyone who lives and works in the home needs to use hygiene and laundry products that do not contain fragrances. You can learn more about what that means here: https://eastbaymeditation.org/resources/frangrance-free-at-ebmc/ and here: https://brownstargirl.org/frangrance-free-femme-of-colour-genius/

Requirements: Must understand the importance of being "fragrance-free". Must be kind, patient, understanding, and supportive. Must be vaccinated and boosted (when eligible) as this is a high-risk household. Must be detail-oriented and vigilant. Must wear a mask covering both mouth and nose (except when eating or drinking). Must be self-motivated and organized. Must be proficient in reading and writing in English. Must have strong communication skills. Must be able to lift 20-25 lbs. Must know how to safely operate household appliances (i.e. stove, microwave, washer, dryer). Must have access to reliable transportation. Must be respectful and comfortable working with transgender adults.

Preferred: Caregiving experience. ASL competency, experience, or willingness to learn is strongly preferred. Experience with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing communities. Experience working with transgender and nonbinary individuals.

Note: DSP is required to work with any individual in United Supportive Living (USL) as long as it is within the time frame of the shift being worked.
