    The WAVE Foundation at Newport Aquarium's Camp WAVE Counselor serves as an instructor for WAVE education programs, which aim to excite, engage and educate our community about the wonders of aquatic life and the importance of conservation. The Camp WAVE Counselor is instrumental in the execution of curriculum for Camp WAVE. Under the supervision of the Education Coordinator, Counselors will execute curriculum for the upcoming summer camp program, making sure those programs are in alignment with State and National standards, while serving as an ambassador for WAVE in the community and other duties as assigned.

     

    Required Skills

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Assist/Lead in the delivery of WAVE Education programs and initiatives; primarily Camp WAVE, pre-care, and post-care.
    • Assist/Lead with daily camp activities including set up, instruction, clean up and supply inventory as needed.
    • Maintain an awareness of industry guidelines pertaining to education programs as set forth by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums
    • Follow and adhere to the WAVE Foundation and Newport Aquarium policies and procedures for proper care, handling and presentation of program animals upon completion of animal handling training to be provided by Education Department staff
    • Operate a variety of audio/visual equipment upon completion of training to be provided by Education Coordinator
    • Selling the revenue producing programs (camps and outreaches) to schools, libraries, day cares, senior centers, mom’s clubs, etc.
    • Willing to be trained on handling animals for educational programs
    • Communicate and maintain working relationships with counselors, students, guests, staff, supervisors, volunteers, other departments, and colleagues in related industries
    • Communicate well in an environment which may include young children, loud noises, large crowds and varying settings (each program is unique and you must be prepared to work with a new environment each time)
    • Perform Herschend Family Entertainment Core Values and Newport Aquarium Guest Service Accountabilities, Policies and Procedures, and Safety Protocols

     

    Required Experience

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Must be at least 18 years of age.
    • Completed degree or working towards some form of degree, preferably in an animal science or educational field.
    • Must have strong public speaking skills especially with children
    • Ability to work at least six weeks during the camp season (June 5th-August11th)
    • Summer availability should be organized and accessible during the interview process
    • Willingness to take direction and coaching from experienced staff members to improve skills and enhance guest experience
    • Must read, write, and speak the English language (knowledge of other languages a plus)
    • Demonstrate ability to work as part of a team in a constantly changing environment as well as individually
    • Ability to perform in a fast-paced job and remain courteous, friendly, and helpful to guests and staff at all times
    • Must have valid driver’s license, clean driving record, & proof of full coverage insurance

     

    PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening and background check.
    • In good health and capable of performing strenuous and/or heavy physical labor
    • No history of animal or plant allergy, which might interfere with ability to work
    • Ability to remain on feet for long periods of time, climb stairs, bend and stoop
    • Physical strength, including the ability to lift up to 25 pounds and push 50 pounds
    • Note: Position may involve exposure to inclement weather, dust, potentially dangerous an unpredictable animal species, and potential dangerous machinery, restraint devices and toxic chemicals and/or drugs. Occasional use of protective clothing or equipment is required e.g. goggles, mask, gloves, and gowns.

    TRAINING:          

    • Complete Aquarium Orientation and on-line Training.
    • Complete Program Animal Handling Training and Education Program Training.
    • Complete First Aid/CPR Training.

     

    COMMITMENT:

    • Must commit to Monday through Friday,
    • MUST BE AVAILABLE MAY 29TH THROUGH MAY 31ST FOR MANDATORY SUMMER CAMP TRAINING.
    • Camp WAVE Schedule includes June 4th –August 10th
    • Consideration will be made for pre-planned vacations presented during the interview and selected process.
