  • Responsibilities

    Surgi-Center of Central Virginia is an ambulatory surgery center that focuses on several case-lines. We are committed to patient service and excellence. We are seeking an experience medical records specialist. A medical records specialist is responsible for appropriately and accurately verify and process requests for charts to be pulled for patient care, quality review, and audits in a timely manner. They accurately scan and index medical records to the appropriate chart; they release information to patients, healthcare facilities and other entities with following all laws and regulations including HIPAA.

    Essential Functions also include:

    • Appropriately and accurately pulls records for patient care, quality review, and audits in a timely manner.

    • Observe confidentiality and safeguards all patient related information.

    • Responsible for coordinating the release of medical information to insurance companies, lawyers, state, and federal agencies.

    • Responsible for processing of subpoenas and court orders, at the direction of the HIMS director, if required.

    • Verify authorizations in accordance with company policy and procedures according to state and federal laws.

    • Ensure that all requests for records are stamped with date received and logged in the correspondence log book.

    • Notify requester when records are available.

    • Able to retrieve files from doctor’s deficiency area are well as perm filing.

    • Maintain a good working relationship within the department and other departments.

    • Adhere to industry requirements, policies, and standards.

    • Provide excellent customer service.

    • Filing of all records.

    • Answering main phone line in the department.

     

    Required Skills

    Position Requirements: 

    • Minimum 1-2 years of hospital or medical records experience required.
    • Knowledge of The Joint Commission Standards
    • Ability to use time wisely in preparing work area to meet high-paced demand.
    • Show a genuine desire to work and improve the center as a whole.
    • Must be detail oriented.
    • Must be able to communicate verbally and non-verbally in a professional manner.
    • Must be able to adhere to hospital financial and admitting policies.
    • Ability to promote positive relationships with patients and staff.
    • Must know insurance verification and collection processes.
    • Must have problem solving and decision making skills.
    • Professional appearance.
    • Must demonstrate excellent phone etiquette and exceptional customer service skills.
