    UpScale is a smart and well-positioned pre-seed startup on a mission to make Engineers’ jobs easier and revolutionize the way businesses scale their distributed systems. Our groundbreaking technology, currently at MVP stage, offers a technically proven and disruptive solution to the challenges of balancing scale, speed, and data integrity in distributed systems across various industries from Cloud Computing/SaaS to Multiplayer gaming, Finance, and Critical Systems in transportation and government. By securely accelerating the rate of consensus and other distributed coordination activities by a factor of 50-60x, our product enables unprecedented scale while automating critical data integrity features that otherwise come with expensive or painful tradeoffs in latency and availability.

    We are eligible for WOSB and other small business set-aside contracts from the federal government, so experience with government contracting is a plus. Our dual-use business goals require a strong hiring preference for citizens of the United States and allied countries.

    We are preparing to launch our B2B platform-as-a-service virtual appliance on leading cloud marketplaces, enabling businesses to seamlessly scale their operations while optimizing performance and efficiency. In 2024 we plan to launch our physically emplaced, high-end hardware version for use in the private clouds of mission-critical core services providers in Healthcare, Finance, and Government.

    Position Overview:

    This is no ordinary b2b software sales position. We are seeking a talented, driven and high-performing Startup Sales Engineer to lead our sales approach. As one of our first hires, you will play a critical role in deeply understanding, contextualizing, and communicating our product-market fit in a broad range of markets and industries.

    This entails a deep understanding of the relationships among the following:

    • Raft & Paxos
    • Etcd, Zookeeper & other distributed databases
    • Kubernetes
    • Distributed Coordination Activities like Network Synchronicity, Ordering of Operations, Sequence of Data, Resource Allocation, and Task Scheduling
    • Time Sync and multi-sensor input
    • Tools like PyTorch, Cadence that auto-scale across distributed systems
    • Service Mesh and Middleware

    Finally, you will be responsible for understanding our customers' technical needs, demonstrating the value of our solution, and closing deals.

    Responsibilities:

    • Collaborate with leadership to identify and target potential customers; develop and maintain a pipeline of leads.
    • Understand the technical aspects of our product thoroughly and articulate its benefits to customers.
    • Provide pre-sales technical support, including product demonstrations, technical presentations, and answering customer inquiries.
    • Collaborate with the product development team to gather customer feedback and shape the product roadmap.
    • Collaborate with potential customers to identify the potential language differences and problem-solution overlaps that may be available.
    • Demonstrate that you read the whole posting by mentioning a marsupial in your questionnaire answers.
    • Assist in the creation of sales collateral, including technical documentation, whitepapers, and case studies.
    • Work closely with customers throughout the sales process to ensure their technical requirements are met.
    • Achieve and exceed sales targets, contributing to the growth of the company.
    • Scout potential customers, partnerships, and other opportunities for sales.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field. With significant experience and sales talent, certifications may be acceptable alternatives.
    • Proven experience in technical sales, especially in disruptive products or at the nexus of hardware and software.
    • Strong understanding of distributed systems and cloud computing.
    • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to quickly assess and adjust to the technical level of new audiences and to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
    • Innovation Navigation Skills - the ability to guide and translate among technical and non-technical actors who must jointly understand the problem-solution set and make purchasing decisions.
    • Self-motivated, goal-oriented, and able to work independently.
    • Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to think creatively.
    • Proficiency in using CRM and sales tools.
    • Willingness to travel as needed for customer meetings and events.

    Compensation:

    • Base Salary: Competitive base salary commensurate with experience.
    • Commission: 30% commission on all new sales.

    • Stock Options: A stock option pool is available for early hires

    Career Growth:

    This position offers the potential for promotion to Chief Technology Officer (CTO) after 18 months, if the hire demonstrates exceptional creativity, broad technical understanding, solid leadership and appropriate interpersonal skills, and if their business development work drives significant growth for the company.
