Role Summary
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Associate Scientist to join our Upstream Cell Culture Process Development Team. The ideal candidate will support aspects of cell line development and upstream cell culture activities for antibody-based pipeline programs, with a specific focus on antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), bispecifics, and fusion proteins. In this role, you will contribute to cell culture operations, including cell line development, media preparation, seed train expansion, and small-scale bioreactor experiments. This position is ideal for recent graduates with a strong foundation in mammalian cell culture and an interest in next-generation biologics manufacturing.
The position is based in Gaithersburg, MD.
Job Responsibilities
· Perform routine cell culture duties including thawing, expansion, passaging, cryopreservation, and monitoring of various cell lines.
· Maintain sterile techniques in a biosafety cabinet and ensure aseptic conditions are met at all times.
· Prepare media, reagents, and supplements required for cell culture.
· Monitor cell growth, viability, and metabolic parameters using manual and automated systems.
· Record experimental data accurately and maintain up-to-date laboratory notebooks and documentation.
· Contribute to scientific documentation authoring and review, including experimental reports, SOPs, batch records, and technical summaries.
· Assist in troubleshooting and optimizing culture conditions under supervision.
· Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and good laboratory practices (GLP).
· Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams in research, quality, and production.
Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, or a related field.
· 2-3 years of hands-on experience with mammalian or microbial cell culture (internships, co-ops, or academic lab experience acceptable).
· Familiarity with sterile technique, cell culture protocols, and laboratory safety standards.
· Has direct experience with CHO cells lines and other suspension cultures and understands the basics of CHO cell metabolism and gas transport.
· Knowledge of cGMP regulations and documentation practices preferred.
· Experience with bioreactor systems, scale-up, and biologics production processes.
· Experience writing or reviewing SOPs, technical protocols, or regulatory documentation.
· Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
· Effective verbal and written communication skills.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
· Must be able to work flexible shifts, including weekends, or evenings, as needed.
