  • Responsibilities

    Primary Purpose

    Triage and investigate security alerts on VELCO's corporate network. The intern will perform active security monitoring, threat detection & hunting, and light incident response through IBM's QRADAR and Carbon Black Cloud EDR. The intern may utilize tools such as Tenable Nessus to perform vulnerability assessments or network scans. The intern may also be responsible for tuning VELCO's detections rules with coordination with VELCO's security operation center contractors. Additionally, they will be responsible for coordinating with VELCO staff and VELCO's security contractors for incident response purposes. Overall, the intern will learn how a SOC operates, its value to an organization, common procedures and detections in an enterprise IT environment, alert investigation and triage, how malware works, and how enterprises build and enforce their security postures. The tasks are expected to be completed independently, with assistance provided by supervisors, the internship coordinator, and fellow interns. **

    Responsibilities**
    • Perform active security monitoring and threat detection
    • Work with SOC and SIEM + EDR/XDR
    • Develop an enhanced understanding of digital forensics and artifacts
    • Support the team in investigations on security alerts to VELCO's corporate network
    • Support the team to monitor and understand network traffic
    • Learn to perform light incident response and alert triage
    • Develop new/existing SOPs for common security events **

    Education & Experience**
    Currently pursuing a degree in information technology, information security, computer science or related field. Preference will be given to students who have accumulated two years of pertinent part-time experience. **

    Knowledge/Skills**
    • Understanding of the principals of operating systems
    • Basic understanding of networking principles: subnets, routing, OSI model, etc.
    • Experience with malware and anti-malware products
    • Understanding of the components of a corporate IT network (AD, FTP, etc.)
    • Ability to work in a team environment and collaborate effectively with colleagues
    • Open-mindedness, strong communication and problem-solving skills

    Physical/Mental Demands
    • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
    • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
    • Must maintain a valid driver's license.
