  • Responsibilities

    Under the guidance of the telecommunications supervisor and the network engineer team, the telecom engineering intern assists in enterprise technical engineering and support, as well as network and project based activities. Working in collaboration with the Telecommunications team and stakeholders, this intern assists in the design, management, operation, and maintenance of VELCO's telecommunication networks and related interfaces that provide critical communication services to VELCO, Vermont's distribution utilities, and other related stakeholders.

    The intern assists in and helps facilitate network design and planning and integration support functions, such as troubleshooting, analysis, research, debugging and problem solving and appropriately engages in the technical activities of the telecommunication systems administration support team, including upgrading and disaster recovery plans. **
    Primary Purpose**
    To work closely with our network engineering team to assist in the design, implementation, and maintenance of our telecommunications infrastructure on capital project. Gain practical experience in telecom network engineering. Opportunity to contribute to real-world projects and initiatives. **
    Responsibilities**
    • Learns to monitor and conduct trend analysis for telecommunication networks to proactively identify performance issues ensuring highest availability of critical networks.
    • Collaborates with and supports all members of the Telecommunications Group.
    • Develops a diversified knowledge of carrier class telecommunication engineering practices and standards in system designs and operation.
    • Gains understanding of telecommunication transport technologies. **
    Education & Experience**
    Currently pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. Preference will be given to students who have accumulated two years of pertinent part-time experience. **
    Knowledge/Skills**
    • Familiarity with electrical engineering, computer science concepts
    • Experience with network security, firewalling, related protocol analysis and SNMP is desirable
    • Strong technical skills and ability to troubleshoot computer hardware and software issues
    • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and relational databases
    • Ability to work in a team environment and collaborate effectively with colleagues
    • Open-mindedness, strong communication and problem-solving skills

    Physical/Mental Demands
    • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
    • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
    • Must maintain a valid driver's license.
