    Valar Atomics is a startup in El Segundo, CA. We aim to synthesize liquid hydrocarbon fuels from CO2 using process heat from nuclear fission, unlocking the potential of fission to make abundant carbon-neutral energy.

    Position Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Nuclear Fuel Engineer to join our team. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in the design, analysis, and management of Valar Atomics' nuclear fuel . This includes the development of fuel cycle strategies, Procuring and qualifying fuel, optimizing fuel performance, ensuring regulatory compliance, and contributing to research and development efforts.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Design and analyze nuclear fuel assemblies and their components to ensure optimal performance and safety.
    • Develop and implement fuel cycle strategies, including fuel procurement, utilization, and disposal plans.
    • Conduct thermal, mechanical, and nuclear analyses to evaluate fuel performance under various operating conditions.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support reactor operations, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
    • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, codes, and standards pertaining to nuclear fuel.
    • Prepare technical reports, documentation, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
    • Participate in research and development projects aimed at improving fuel qualification, efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness.
    • Provide technical support during fuel manufacturing, testing, and quality assurance processes.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field (Master's or PhD preferred).
    • Proven experience in nuclear fuel design, analysis, and management.
    • Strong understanding of nuclear reactor physics, thermodynamics, and materials science.
    • Proficiency in using simulation and modeling software`, including HTR fuel performance (e.g., MCNP, SCALE, HTR specific codes, OpenMC).
    • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry standards related to nuclear fuel.
    • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
    • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
    • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience with advanced fuel designs and next-generation reactors.
    • Familiarity with nuclear fuel fabrication processes and technologies.

    To work at Valar Atomics you must be:

    • authorized to work in the US, and
    • be a US Citizen, a US Person (as defined by ITAR regulations) or be a citizen of a country listed in Appendix A to Part 810—Generally Authorized Destinations.
