Valar Atomics is a startup in El Segundo, CA. We aim to synthesize liquid hydrocarbon fuels from CO2 using process heat from nuclear fission, unlocking the potential of fission to make abundant carbon-neutral energy.
Position Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Nuclear Safety analyst to join our team. As a Nuclear Safety Analyst at Valar Atomics specializing in high temperature reactor (HTR) technology, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and regulatory compliance of our nuclear systems. You will conduct thorough deterministic safety analyses and assessments to identify potential safety hazards, develop mitigation strategies, and provide technical support to ensure safety design of our reactor designs.
1. Conduct safety analyses of the entire nuclear system, including core design, fuel performance, coolant systems, and associated safety systems.
2. Asses source term, releases and dose to workers, public and Environment.
3. Utilize advanced modeling and simulation tools to assess reactor behavior under normal operation, transient conditions, and accident scenarios.
4. Evaluate and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements from relevant authorities, such as the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) or equivalent regulatory bodies in other countries.
5. Collaborate with engineering teams to incorporate safety considerations into the design, construction, and operation of SMR components and systems.
6. Participate in design reviews, safety reviews, and risk assessments to identify potential safety issues and recommend design modifications or procedural changes as necessary.
7. Develop and maintain safety documentation, including safety analyses reports, technical specifications, and licensing documentation.
8. Stay current with industry standards, best practices, and emerging technologies related to nuclear safety and high temperature reactor technology.
9. Provide technical expertise and support to regulatory interactions, including license applications, inspections, and audits.
1. Bachelor's degree or higher in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
2. Solid understanding of nuclear physics, reactor dynamics, and thermal-hydraulics.
3. Experience with nuclear safety analysis methodologies, such as probabilistic risk assessment (PRA), deterministic safety analysis, and thermal-hydraulic modeling.
4. Familiarity with regulatory requirements for nuclear facilities, preferably with experience in the licensing process for nuclear reactors.
5. Proficiency in computer programming and simulation software commonly used in nuclear engineering and safety assessments (e.g., MCNP, RELAP, HTR-specific codes, MELCOR).
6. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and a commitment to safety.
7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical information to diverse audiences.
8. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic startup environment, with a proactive and results-driven attitude.
1. Master's degree or higher in nuclear engineering or a related field.
2. Experience working with small modular reactors or advanced reactor designs, particularly high temperature reactor technology.
