    Organization: US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) - Marine Meteorology Division

    About the Role

    The US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), a premier scientific institution within the US government, is seeking a highly qualified Microwave Remote Sensing and Sensor Calibration/Validation Specialist. This role will contribute to the cutting-edge research and development efforts of the Marine Meteorology Division in Monterey, California, focusing on advancing the understanding and application of microwave remote sensing technologies.

    The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers engaged in the analysis, development, and validation of microwave remote sensing systems. This includes pre-flight specifications, characterization of microwave radiometer systems, and calibration/validation of space-based microwave radiometric data.

    The Marine Meteorology Division, part of NRL’s Ocean and Atmospheric Science and Technology Directorate, conducts research to enhance understanding of atmospheric processes and their impact on naval operations. The division develops automated systems for analyzing, simulating, and predicting atmospheric behaviors and their influence on naval weapon systems.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Analyze microwave remote sensing systems and their performance.
    • Perform pre-flight specifications and characterizations of microwave radiometer systems.
    • Conduct calibration and validation of space-based microwave radiometric data.
    • Handle and analyze large-volume data sets.
    • Apply statistical analysis to interpret and validate remote sensing data.
    • Develop and utilize tools and techniques related to microwave radiative transfer, radiometer design, and calibration methodologies.

    Qualifications and Skills

    Required:

    • ACTIVE SECRET CLEARANCE
    • Bachelor's degree (or higher: M.S., Ph.D., or equivalent experience) in Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Atmospheric Science (Meteorology), Physical Oceanography, Physics, Computer Science, Statistics, or related disciplines.
    • Proficiency in one or more of the following programming languages and/or tools: FORTRAN, C/C++, Python, UNIX shell scripting, Matlab, or IDL.
    • Strong analytical skills with experience handling and interpreting large data sets.

    Preferred:

    • Expertise in microwave radiative transfer.
    • Knowledge of microwave radiometer design and calibration methodologies.
    • Background in statistical analysis of scientific data.
