NextGen Children's Ministry Director

Portola Valley, CA

We’re looking for a NextGen Director to join our growing team. The NextGen Director is responsible for overseeing and directing the children’s ministry at VPC from birth through 12th grade and will establish a long-term vision for how the church engages with children and youth. The NextGen Director will initiate and maintain programs and activities that promote community, fun and faith development in a safe and joyful environment.

At Valley Presbyterian Church, we value a wholehearted and spacious faith. For us, that means nurturing a culture of people who care—about you, about our congregation, and about our communities. We want to be a place where our diversity brings us together and conversation takes us deeper. Our size, picturesque location and supportive culture make this a reality.

The NextGen Director will serve as the spiritual leader of VPC’s ministry for our children and youth (and their families), reporting to and working with the Lead Pastor to implement and build our strategic focus to be a base camp in Portola Valley, serving families within and outside of the congregation.

The ideal candidate will have a heart for supporting families in their faith journey. He or she will have ministry experience and the capacity to build strong community relationships. This role requires the ability to strategically engage with community audiences through grassroots and outreach efforts. This role will be a strong cross functional partner to multiple teams within the church. This role invites a revisioning of what ministry to family and kids can be in this cultural moment.

As our Next Gen Director, you will use a collaborative, creative approach to design and lead the Children’s Program and curriculum in alignment with VPC’s values. We are looking for someone who is highly relational, flexible, and creates a culture of belonging and love within the Christian story.

Currently, we have a growing group of young families with children from infants to middle school. In the last two years, we’ve reimagined our Sunday morning program. We rotate between Godly Play (creating meaning through story and wondering questions), Creative Dramatics, Awe Walks in the Redwood Grove and a Creative Response week that is filled with music and arts. We are committed to continued innovation that puts focus on the whole child and ensures each child feels supported and rooted in a trusted, loving community.

Collaborate: Develop a core team to brainstorm and develop projects and resources to creatively serve kids and families on Sunday mornings. Take part in big-picture conversations about church calendar, special seasons and projects, and research and curate resources to add to those initiatives.

Next Gen Volunteers: Maintain intentionality and gauge effectiveness in investing in the next generation. Cultivate relationships with church members and invite people into volunteer opportunities that fit their gifts, interests, and expertise.

Partner with Parents: Find ways to partner with parents in raising their children by engaging every parent in their role of providing spiritual development. Support and engage VPC’s Moms group, and other parent development opportunities.

Promote service: Create consistent opportunities for kids to serve within and beyond the community.

Community Outreach: Facilitate ways to focus our attention and resources on the next generation outside the walls of the church. Promote relationships with the Portola Valley Theater Conservatory, surrounding school districts, and churches to reach our local communities.

    Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in theology, education, or a related field

At least 7 years of experience in children's ministry

    Strong leadership and organizational skills

    Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Passion for working with children and families

    Salary range: 70-90k

Flexible work from home options available.
