  • Responsibilities

    The Van Driver is responsible for the safe and timely transportation of youth participants to and from the Al Wooten Jr. Youth Center, as well as to field trips, events, and other related activities including transportation from school. This role includes ensuring the safety of all passengers, maintaining the cleanliness and operation of the vehicle, and adhering to the organization’s policies and procedures.

    Scheduled work times: Monday: 12:30pm-4pm. Tuesday: 2:30pm-4:30pm. Wednesday: 1pm-5pm. Thursday: 2pm-5:30pm. Friday: 1:30pm-4:30pm.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Safe Transportation:

    Safely transport youth participants between their homes, schools, the Al Wooten Jr. Youth Center, and other destinations as required.

    Follow all traffic laws and driving regulations to ensure the safety of passengers.

    Vehicle Maintenance and Inspection:

    Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle to ensure it is in safe operating condition.

    Report any mechanical issues or maintenance needs to the Transportation Coordinator promptly.

    Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the vehicle.

    Passenger Management:

    Ensure that all passengers are wearing seatbelts and are seated safely during transit.

    Assist youth in boarding and exiting the vehicle as needed.

    Monitor passenger behavior during transportation and enforce safety rules.

    Schedule Adherence:

    Follow the assigned schedule and routes, ensuring timely pick-up and drop-off of passengers.

    Communicate any delays or issues with the Transportation Coordinator or Program Director.

    Record Keeping:

    Maintain accurate records of mileage, fuel consumption, and any incidents or accidents that occur during transport.

    Complete and submit any required documentation or reports in a timely manner.

    Communication:

    Maintain effective communication with the Transportation Coordinator, Program Director, and parents/guardians regarding transportation schedules, changes, or concerns.

    Report any concerns related to the youth’s well-being or safety to the appropriate staff member.

    Support of Program Activities:

    Assist with loading and unloading of equipment or materials needed for field trips or events.

    Support the youth center’s mission by being a positive role model and engaging with the youth when appropriate.

    Qualifications:

    Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent required.

    Previous experience as a van driver, bus driver, or similar role preferred.

    Experience working with youth is a plus.

    Licenses and Certifications:

    Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

    Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger endorsement may be required depending on the vehicle type.

    Skills and Abilities:

    Strong knowledge of traffic laws and defensive driving techniques.

    Ability to communicate effectively with youth, parents, and staff.

    Excellent time management and organizational skills.

    Ability to remain calm and handle emergencies or unexpected situations effectively.

    Working Conditions:

    Physical Requirements: Ability to sit for extended periods while driving.

    Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds (e.g., loading/unloading equipment).

    Ability to assist youth with mobility challenges in boarding and exiting the vehicle.

    Work Environment:

    Work involves exposure to varying weather conditions while driving and during boarding/exiting of passengers

    Must be available to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.
