    ABOUT US:

    Vaxart is a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing a range of oral recombinant vaccines based on its proprietary delivery platform. Vaxart vaccines are administered using convenient room temperature-stable tablets that can be stored and shipped without refrigeration.

    Vaxart has demonstrated that its proprietary tablet vaccine delivery platform is suitable to deliver recombinant vaccines, positioning the company to develop oral versions of currently marketed vaccines and to design recombinant vaccines for new indications. Its development programs currently include tablet vaccines designed to protect against coronavirus, norovirus, seasonal influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), as well as a therapeutic vaccine for human papillomavirus (HPV), Vaxart's first immuno-oncology indication.

    Our mission is the promotion of global health through the development of effective vaccines that can be administered by tablet rather than by injection, providing for the simple and efficient distribution and administration of safe vaccines in any setting.

    We are looking for a Environmental Health & Safety Specialist to join our growing South San Francisco team!

    SUMMARY:

    Environmental Health & Safety Specialist implements and administers the Vaxart's environmental, health and safety programs within the company. Reporting into the Manufacturing department, the position coordinates activities with such groups as Manufacturing, Materials Management, Process Development, Analytical Development, Quality Control, Research & Development (R&D), and Facilities.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Manages the company's operations as it pertains to compliance with established company EH&S-related SOP's and applicable regulations at the Federal, State, County and Local level.
    • Responsible for overseeing EH&S related activities across multiple sites and areas.
    • Becomes the immediate Liaison with all regulatory agencies and inspectors as it applies to EHS concerns.
    • Responsible for the escalation of business-critical events to higher level of authority where applicable.
    • Services & maintains all documentation relating to state & county permits (air, biohazardous & hazardous).
    • Annually reviews & revises all EH&S-related SOP's for final approval by Management.
    • Services, maintains and is directly responsible for the welfare of both medical and biohazardous waste, including, but not limited to waste characterization, waste preparation, waste scheduling & waste disposal.
    • Oversees fire extinguisher & eyewash/deluge shower inspections (weekly, monthly, quarterly, annually & periodically where applicable).
    • Responds to ergonomic requests with ergonomic assessment & applicable recommendations to case closure.
    • Directly responsible for ensuring all EH&S-related training is delivered to applicable personnel as outlined in internal training SOP's and that the EH&S training program is maintained compliant at all times.
    • Identifies workplace hazards and promulgates related corrective actions to closure in a timely manner.
    • Investigates all accidents/injuries & processes metrics to Senior Management to highlight accident trending.
    • Fosters a safe working environment both in the manufacturing and laboratory areas.
    • Contributes in design of equipment and facility safety as needed.
    • Chairs & coordinates the safety committee and emergency response team.
    • Responsible with seismic safety as needed.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Bachelor's degree in related science field or equivalent combination of education and experience (biology, chemistry, physics). Background in biotechnology or industrial hygiene is preferred.
    • 5+ years of related work experience in the field of environmental, health & safety as it relates to biotechnology and laboratory environments with an ability to expound on the theory and practical delivery of successful EHS-related programs.
    • Highly desirable qualifications: C.I.H.
    • Preferred qualifications: ASP, CSP, CHHM.
    • Experience in conducting ergonomic evaluations and making recommendations for applicable equipment purchases.
    • Educational background in EHS matters including, but not limited to, chemical safety & waste regulations, accident & injury prevention, emergency response, ergonomics, environmental sustainability, knowledge and understanding of CLIA/CAP as they relate to EH&S.
