Vermejo Park Ranch, a remote 585,000-acre ranch in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado, is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator. The Heavy Equipment Division is responsible for road maintenance and support for projects on the ranch ranging from infrastructure, conservation and capital projects across the ranch.
Vermejo Park is one of the largest privately-owned ranches in North America; its modern history as a ranch originates with the Beaubien and Miranda Land Grant of 1841. The Ranch is well-known for its trophy big game hunting, fishing, adventure and nature tourism, natural resources restoration, sustainable forestry, bison production, coalbed natural gas production, and endangered species restoration. Vermejo has operated as a premier destination for fishing and hunting for over 100 years and has a developing nature tourism venue. The Heavy Equipment Operator will operate a variety of equipment in support of ranch operations including Graders, Dozers, Excavators, and Backhoes. The successful candidate will be committed to furthering Vermejo’s mission of balancing economic sustainability and conservation.
Primary Responsibilities
Equipment Operation – Operate a range of equipment including but not limited to Graders, Dozers, Excavators, Front End Loader and Backhoes to maintain roads and projects across the Ranch.
Safety –The Heavy Equipment Operator will consider safety in all aspects of the job and attend and participate in all required safety meetings.
Maintenance – Daily maintenance of equipment, i.e. daily walk around inspection, machine fluid levels and greasing are the responsibility of the Heavy Equipment Operator. Ability to perform minor mechanical repairs is preferred. Operator will be required to assist with repairs as needed.
Housekeeping – Operator will be required to maintain a clean and safe working environment at all times; including vehicles, pickups, and helping to keep the shop clean and orderly.
CDL - A CDL or ability to obtain a CDL is preferred.
Willingness to serve on the Vermejo Park/Colfax County District 7 Fire Department in Structural Fighting.
Willingness to serve as a Wildland Firefighter for Prescribed Burns and Wildlife Suppression.
Other duties as assigned by the Heavy Equipment Manager or Ranch Management.
Applicant will be required to work some weekends and holidays as needed and be on a 24-hour “On-Call” at times, i.e. during the winter for snow removal.
Qualifications
Minimum education: High School diploma or equivalent required. Associates degree in a related field preferred.
Minimum experience: 5 years directly-related experience operating several different types of equipment.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Successful applicants must possess a valid New Mexico Driver’s license or be able to obtain one within 30 days of employment. A CDL or ability to obtain a CDL is preferred. Driving record must meet the eligibility requirements of the TEI liability carrier. Employee will be required to sign a confidentiality statement and undergo a background check.

Living Conditions: Vermejo Park Ranch is remote, located 40 miles west of Raton, NM on Highway 555, a town of 7,000 people. Ranch headquarters is located at 7600’ elevation on the east slope of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and enjoys a generally temperate climate, though winters will see sub-zero weather, and summers can occasionally climb to the mid-90’s. Basic services (medical, dental, banking, vehicle repairs, shopping, etc.) are available in Raton. Housing is not provided. A housing allowance will be provided and transportation to and from Raton to the work site.
