Position Summary
Veterinary Assistants (VAs) in the Laboratory Department play a vital role in the accuracy, efficiency, and organization of diagnostic testing at Orchard Park Veterinary Medical Center (OPVMC). Working behind the scenes in a busy, 24/7 emergency and specialty hospital, VA Lab staff ensure that samples are correctly processed, tracked, and communicated. They serve as the logistical bridge between clinical teams and diagnostic outcomes by handling specimens, data entry, and communication of outsourced lab results.
This position is ideal for detail-oriented individuals who thrive in a fast-paced, systems-driven environment and are passionate about supporting patient care through high-quality diagnostics.
Essential Functions
- Receive lab samples from clinical teams through the lab window and delegate tasks appropriately
- Match samples to requisitions and ensure accuracy and labeling compliance
- Process in-house diagnostics per protocol (centrifuging, preparing slides, etc.)
- Enter lab information, results, and updates into Ezy Vet and associated systems
- Manage paperwork for internal and external lab submissions
- Track and log results from outsourced laboratories; ensure timely delivery of findings to veterinarians
- Maintain cleanliness, order, and biosafety standards in the lab space
- Monitor and restock laboratory supplies as needed
- Assist with training of new VA lab team members after being fully trained in the role
- Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Lab Manager or leadership
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Prior experience in a veterinary or medical lab setting preferred
- Strong comfort level with computers, data entry, and handling paperwork
- Familiarity with Ezy Vet or other EMR systems a plus
