DESCRIPTION:

Viome is a wellness as a service company that applies artificial intelligence and machine learning to biological data – e.g., microbiome (bacteria, fungi, and other microbes), and transcriptome (sum of RNA molecules) data – to provide personalized recommendations for healthy living. We are a small, fast-growing, interdisciplinary team of passionate experts in software engineering, biochemistry, microbiology, medicine, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

We are seeking a Staff Backend Software Engineer to build high-performance, scalable systems end to end, and work closely on the development of Viome’s next-generation infrastructure and backend systems.

This is a full-time onsite position at Viome’s office in Bellevue, WA.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Own key features or sub-systems of Viome
• Be hands on and involved with every stage of the product development cycle
• Build APIs that support new features for our customer facing and internal web/mobile apps
• Foster a culture of ownership, measurement, and testing.
• Provide leadership with technical solutions, feedback, and product recommendations 
• Work collaboratively to generate product improvements through design review, code review, and discussion
• Mentors across teams in an open, respectful, flexible, empathetic manner. Fosters a culture of mentoring across teams by seeking out mentoring opportunities for themselves and others, and supports others in their growth as mentors.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• BS/MS degree in Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent
• 7+ years' experience in software engineering in a functional or object-oriented language (Java, Scala)
• Experience designing and optimizing relational databases (Postgres, MySQL, Oracle, MS SQL Server)
• Excellent grasp of engineering principles, test-driven development, and CI/CD process
• Hands on experience with public cloud offerings (AWS, Azure)
• The desire to work in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong written and verbal skills, including the ability to communicate succinctly, effectively explaining technical concepts to non-technical personnel
• Solid understanding of information security standards and methodologies
• Experience mentoring and developing software engineers

NICE TO HAVE BUT NOT REQUIRED:

• Experience with microservices or serverless architectures
• Practical knowledge of agile software development methodologies (e.g., XP, scrum)
• Experience with large scale distributed systems and event-driven architectures
• Experience with security of medical data such as HIPAA compliance is a plus
