  • Responsibilities

    This position coordinates and manages the production of news stories and newscasts for the KCCU network.  This position reports to the Director of Broadcasting. The insertion and automation of “On-Air” materials are cleared through the Operations Director.

     Job Duties as News Director include but are not limited to:

    • Writing and producing pre-recorded news stories and newscasts and other promotional material for inclusion within KCCU programming.
    • Live, on-air coverage of severe weather and news events may be necessary. 
    • Supervise and work with part-time student reporters and news interns. 
    • Work under direct supervision of the Director of Broadcasting to identify news stories to cover on KCCU. 
    • Assist with on-air membership drives and live remote broadcasts. 
    • Record or produce daily segments for Morning Edition and/or All Things Considered.
    • The News Director will also work with the Director of Broadcasting to coordinate the station’s appearances in the many communities the station serves to identify the various arts and public festivals where the network of KCCU stations can be exposed in our coverage area.  
    • Track stories that affect the broadcast area, including reporting from the Oklahoma State Capitol when appropriate, and following Texas governmental matters.

     

     

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

    1. Bachelor’s degree. 
    2. A knowledge and awareness of the “public radio” style. 
    3. One year of public radio announcing experience.
    4. One year of public radio journalism experience, although commercial radio journalism will be considered.
    5. A conversational hosting ability with a personable on-air style and strong on-air delivery. NPR Style delivery and production standards are required.
    6. Excellent writing and oral communication skills, along with interpersonal and motivational skills. 
    7. Exceptional production skills with a working knowledge of digital audio production techniques and software. 
    8. A familiarity with Audio Vault automation system or similar automation equipment is also required. KCCU uses PC based Digital Audio Workstations
    9. Familiarity with digital field recording devices and associated equipment. 
    10. Computer literate. 
    11. Ability to communicate and work with professional staff and a number of student work-study staff members and interns is required. 
    12. Social Media knowledge (e.g. Web authoring, Facebook & Twitter) and good communication and public relations skills are also a must.

     

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

    1. A Master’s degree in Radio / Television / Communications, or related field.
    2. Knowledge of public radio programming and the mission of public radio. 
    3. Solid journalism background.
    4. Good writing style.
    5. General announcing skills are a must.

    REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: One-year public radio news experience, two to five preferred. Commercial broadcasting experience will be considered.

     

    SALARY RANGE:  Commensurate with education and experience.
