    Job Description

    JOB TITLE: Formulator

    JOB SUMMARY: The Formulator is responsible for developing vitamin and supplement products, researching ingredients, and assisting in our quality assurance program. Other duties include improving the consistency of product flavor and quality. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of factors that impact the flavor and quality of the finished product and must be able to integrate from bench to batch production and to direct production on adjustments to formulation and production machinery. This is a highly technical role with a focus on new product development, from concept to commercialization.

     

    PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

    · Research, generate and direct new product formulation from conceptualization through development and manufacture.

    · Work collaboratively with Sales and R&D to generate new formulations for customers and assist in the development of new products.

    · Work collaboratively with the R&D and Operations teams to troubleshoot technical, formulation, and processing issues during product development.

    · Collaborate with the Quality Assurance department in development of proper documentation for new formula and product development projects.

    · Working knowledge of production equipment such as tablet presses and capsule filling machines in order to work with production personnel to troubleshoot and solve product performance issues on equipment.

    · Troubleshoot and solve problems with making tablets that will withstand processes such as coating and packaging.

    · Initiate Label Copy for supplement facts and all labeling regulatory requirements.

    · Drive, manage, evaluate, and follow through on all aspects of product development.

    · Help integrate consumer insights into the development of product innovations.

    · Collaborate with sales and marketing to develop quote process for products.

    · Source and identify new concepts, ingredients and product forms through internal and external resources.

    · Maintain a high degree of competitive knowledge especially with respect to new technologies, new ingredients, and new product forms.

    · Maintain current product range and generate modifications and improvements when necessary.

    · Maintain and manage efficient lab standard and production standards systems and record keeping.

    · Prepare materials and present new launches at Sales Meetings.

    · Actively participate in product and package configurations for products.

    · Initiate Master Batch Formulation records.

    · Follow proper chain of custody procedures for supplies and ingredients.

    · Conduct final product analysis and testing to ensure quality and compliance for the duration of product shelf life.

    · Develop recipes and prototypes to drive new concepts forward.

    · Oversee the quality control of new products.

    · Maintain laboratory supplies by checking inventory on a regular basis and anticipating needed supplies.

    · Ensure proper storage, labeling, and handling of all chemicals.

    · Ensure all science, R&D and other notes are recorded in company-approved notebooks.

    · Ensure all science notebooks are properly logged and secured each day.

    · Follow all Company Standard Operation Procedure (SOPs).

    · Attend training of new procedures and equipment.

    · Follow all quality control protocols related but not limited to dose accuracy, minimization of product loss, prevention of cross-contamination, and safe storage of raw material, final product, and chemicals.

    · Enforce and maintain a clean and safe work environment in compliance with OSHA, GMP and GLP.

    · Effectively communicate technical information to a non-technical audience.

    · Participate in PR, Media Interviews, Trade Shows, and Lectures, as requested, and with prior approval from management.

    · Maintain pertinent information in Company CRM software.

    · Maintain accurate project information, formulations, and specifications.

    · Prioritize and manage multiple customer products.

    · Perform other duties as assigned.

    EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Engineering, Food Science, Nutrition/Dietetics or related field.

     

    EXPERIENCE: 2-5 years of hands-on experience as a Formulator in a solid, full scale, manufacturing environment, preferably in the dietary supplement industry.

    ADDITIONAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

    Must have a strong working knowledge of basic lab techniques and cGMP standards to ensure the maintenance of the cGMP standard of quality.

    Familiarity with natural product chemistry and chromatography methods.

    Experience in product and formula development and product evaluation.

    Must possess strong knowledge of costing of ingredients and technology.
