Wahupa Upward Bound -TEACHER Wahupa Upward Bound - San Diego, CA 92103 $22 - $32 an hour - Temporary Wahupa Upward Bound -Instructor (5 week Summer Program) Teacher needed for the following classes: *Biology & Chemistry The instructor will teach a 90 min course in Biology and in Chemistry. This position is temporary and subject to termination at will with or without notice or cause and is contingent on grant funding. Program Description Wahupa Upward Bound Program is a federally funded program designed to help low-income, potential first-generation college students generate the skills and motivation necessary to complete a program of secondary education and to enter and succeed in a program of postsecondary education. High school students from South San Diego participate in Upward Bound during the school year and the summer. During the academic year, students participate in weekly tutorials at their high school and monthly programs. During the summer students participate in a 5 week Summer Program. Calendar: Classes begin on June 25th and end on July 18th, Monday through Thursday Staff Training: TBD * Instructors teach for three to four hours each day. Responsibilities include supervision of students during these hours, Monday through Thursday during 4 weeks * To design lesson plans and assessment instruments relevant to achieving designated performance goals and objectives * To enhance the ability of students to complete academic assignments in preparation for a four-year college education in the field assigned to the instruction * To teach college preparatory reading, writing, problem solving, and study skills * To teach appropriate technical skills (grammar, calculation skills, lab skills, etc) and technology (computers, library research, calculators, etc.) * To design independent learning activities that challenge students to improve their reading, writing, mathematical, or scientific skills (as appropriate to the discipline) and prepare for college level work. * To incorporate cooperative learning, journal writing, peer editing and writing groups, and portfolios into your instruction and lesson plans as appropriate to the course goals and assigned discipline. * To lead class discussions that requires all students to participate and demonstrate preparation for class and engagement with the course assignments and concepts. * To fully integrate a college student tutor (when needed) into the classroom as an assistant teacher who participates in teaching, planning and assessment, * To incorporate discussion and development of thinking, study, and/or research skills into your curriculum each day. * To complete a five week syllabus by the end of staff training week. To submit any revisions to the weekly components of that syllabus to the site coordinator at least 7 days in advance of distribution to students. Qualifications * A Bachelors degree (minimum) AND teaching credential * A minimum of one-year formal teaching experience or significant classroom experience in an Upward Bound Project or similar population * Valid California Drivers License and excellent driving record.
