    THE WALKER ART CENTER HAS AN OPENING FOR AN EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATOR

    Educators at the Walker Art Center provide a welcoming and flexible approach to engage a diverse array of visitors and guests to the programming and content through tours, workshops and other learning events.  Educators facilitate inclusive conversations about Walker collections, exhibitions, moving image screenings, performances and other programs.  Educators work individually and in partnership with the Education and Public Programs department to prepare resources and materials which deliver program activities that help shape people's understanding of art with a focus on learner-centered, inquiry-based methods, and come from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds.

    RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE:

    • Facilitate explorations of art and studio sessions for a range of audiences with a focus on student and teacher programs within the Walker galleries, Art Lab, Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, offsite or via video conference for K-12 students.
    • Organization of educational program materials and locations including set-up and take-down.
    • Contribute to research and writing of interpretive materials, including educational resources.
    • Duty of care: supervision of students and participants in Educator's care, protecting both students and artwork.
    • Evaluate and report on programs including numbers, participant feedback, observational notes on curriculum and program structures through surveys and other methods.
    • Attend exhibition walkthroughs, monthly Educator meetings, other training sessions, and conduct own research to facilitate strong base for educating students and teachers.

    HOURS & COMPENSATION:

    Hours vary from week to week, averaging between 4-10 hours/week; $20.00 per hour; exempt; flexibility to work a range of days & hours including evenings & weekends with ability to work at least two shifts per week; must attend monthly Educator trainings, generally held on Monday mornings; museum discounts and membership. This role is hired through Common Sense Building Services for the Walker Art Center. 

    QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

    • Strong interest in education, contemporary arts and culture.
    • Excellent verbal communication skills and poise
    • Ability to improvise and adjust to a range of situations in the moment to problem solve.
    • Experience mediating and facilitating conversations with a wide range of people including from different cultural backgrounds, age ranges, abilities and attitudes.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

    • Experience working with children or in an educational setting.
    • Experience working with people with specific needs including physical and/or intellectual disabilities and/or autism and/or dementia.
    • Strong interest and knowledge in fine arts, design or architecture, art history, art education, media arts, education or social studies is helpful, but not essential.
    • Ability to comfortably speak, read and write in at least one language other than English, preferably Somali, Spanish, Hmong, Arabic, Vietnamese, or American Sign Language.
