POSITION SUMMARY
The Welder / Fabricator is responsible for performing welding, fabrication, repair, and modification tasks to support fleet maintenance operations, construction equipment repairs, custom fabrication projects, and civil infrastructure construction activities. This role requires proficiency in multiple welding processes, blueprint interpretation, equipment repair, and metal fabrication techniques to ensure high-quality, durable, and structurally sound components and repairs. The position supports both shop and field operations and plays a critical role in maintaining operational uptime for construction equipment and fleet assets.
YOUR ROLE
- Perform MIG, TIG, Stick (SMAW), and Flux-Core (FCAW) welding operations in accordance with company standards, project specifications, and repair requirements.
- Read and interpret blueprints, fabrication drawings, welding symbols, schematics, and measurements to ensure accurate fabrication and repair work.
- Fabricate, modify, and repair metal components, structural assemblies, brackets, mounts, supports, guards, handrails, trailers, and construction equipment attachments.
- Repair and reinforce damaged equipment, fleet assets, buckets, blades, trailers, and structural components to maintain safe and reliable operation.
- Perform field welding and emergency repair work on construction equipment and infrastructure components as needed.
- Cut, shape, grind, drill, and assemble metal components using saws, shears, torches, plasma cutters, presses, and other fabrication equipment.
- Assist mechanics and fleet personnel with equipment modifications, structural repairs, and custom fabrication solutions.
- Inspect fabricated and repaired components to ensure proper alignment, structural integrity, durability, and operational functionality.
- Maintain welding equipment, torches, cables, grinders, tools, PPE, gas cylinders, and fabrication materials in safe working condition.
- Operate forklifts, overhead cranes, hoists, and material handling equipment to transport materials and fabricated components safely.
- Follow all OSHA, company, and jobsite safety requirements, including hot work permits, fire prevention practices, confined space awareness, lockout/tagout procedures, and PPE requirements.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in both shop and field settings.
- Collaborate with supervisors, mechanics, project teams, and field personnel to troubleshoot fabrication and repair challenges efficiently.
- Adapt to changing operational priorities, schedules, and project needs in fast-paced construction environments.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
WHAT YOU BRING
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- 3+ years of welding, fabrication, and equipment repair experience, preferably within heavy civil construction, fleet maintenance, or industrial environments.
- AWS (American Welding Society) certification or equivalent preferred.
- Proficiency in MIG, TIG, Stick (SMAW), and Flux-Core (FCAW) welding processes.
- Experience working with carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum materials.
- Strong understanding of welding techniques, metal properties, fabrication methods, and structural repair practices.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, fabrication drawings, welding symbols, and technical specifications.
- Skilled in operating grinders, torches, plasma cutters, saws, presses, and other fabrication equipment safely and effectively.
- Knowledge of structural welding, pipe welding, hydraulic attachment repair, and heavy equipment repair practices preferred.
- Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively within a team environment.
- Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, communication, and time management skills.
- Ability to work safely in both shop and field conditions while maintaining productivity and quality standards.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical requirements for the Welder / Fabricator role include the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, stand for extended periods, and perform physically demanding tasks requiring bending, kneeling, climbing, reaching, and working in awkward positions. This position regularly involves exposure to outdoor weather conditions, welding fumes, sparks, extreme heat, loud noise, dusty environments, confined spaces, and elevated work areas. Candidates must be capable of safely performing work in both shop and field settings while consistently following all safety requirements and properly utilizing PPE, including welding helmets, gloves, respirators, face shields, safety glasses, and protective clothing.
