MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN PART TIME (40 HOURS/2 WEEKS) DAY SHIFT (HOURS VARY BETWEEN 5:30 AM TO 5:00 PM)/EVENING SHIFT (3:00 PM TO 11:00 PM) WEEKEND AND HOLIDAY ROTATION

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Division Manager or other appropriate supervisor, performs a variety of technical and general duties. Functions in one or more laboratory division.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1 Performs routine and/or specialized specimen collection, processing and testing procedures with supervision as appropriate.

2 Performs a variety of duties at progressively greater skill levels under varying degrees of supervision; records results. May operate a variety of laboratory instruments.

3 Performs quality control and instrument check procedures and maintains related records.

4 Makes periodic observations of materials derived from cultures and identifies types of bacterial colonies found by determination of cultural requirements and biochemical reactions in chemically-defined media.

5 May group or type blood of donors and recipients. May determine compatibility of donor blood products with intended recipient.

6 Counts, describes morphology of, and performs studies on blood and other body fluid cells. Performs coagulation testing.

7 May perform chemical and/or immunological tests to identify and/or quantitate substances found in blood and other body fluids.

8 Prepares cytology slides and pathology specimens.

9 Cuts, stains, and mounts specimens of human tissue. Performs special stains on tissues as directed by the pathologist(s).

10 Enters or retrieves data from established computer files.

Required Skills

High School or G.E.D.; Completion of MLT program; certification eligible Associate's Degree in Histologic technology; medical laboratory technology; or military advanced specialist Preferred MLT(ASCP) or HT(ASCP) within one year of date of employment

Required Experience

6 - 12 months experience required Other Good communication and computer skills
