Genetic Counselor - Maternal Fetal Medicine
GENERAL SUMMARY: Under general supervision, provides genetic counseling to high risk patients and their families. Duties and Responsibilities: The following are essential job accountabilities: 1 Provides genetic counseling primarily for prenatal /preconceptional indications. 2 Elicits and obtains family history and medical information. 3 Assists in providing professional psychosocial genetic counseling to individuals regarding genetic conditions existing in or posing potential risks to their children. 4 Offers appropriate medical or genetic testing to individuals/families at risk for genetic diseases or birth defects. 5 Educates and explains technical and medical aspects of diagnostic and screening methods and reproductive options, including associated risks, benefits and limitations. 6 Works in close collaboration with five perinatologists and a team of highly skilled sonographers. 7 Assists in coordinating communication between patient, referring provider, neonatology and other medical professionals in the diagnosis and evaluation of birth conditions. 8 Supports Maternal Fetal Medicine services in satellite clinics via telemedicine. 9 Assists in charting, reporting and coordinating clinical testing and test results. 10 Actively participates in education of medical students, residents and Maternal Fetal Medicine fellows. 11 Provides supervision of genetic counseling students from the University of Maryland training program.
