    GENERAL SUMMARY:

     

     

    Under the general supervision of the Regional Director of Supply Chain, provides staff/professional development expertise as an educator, consultant, facilitator, change agent and leader. This occurs through developing, planning, implementing and evaluating educational programs to meet the needs of the Central Sterile Processing (CSP) Department and to aide in the professional development of staff. The Educator maintains open and active communication with the medical staff, patient care staff, and interdepartmental staff. The Educator ensures the competency of all CSP staff and any other unit staff member performing cleaning, assembly, High Level Disinfectant (HLD) and/or sterilization and maintains education records in compliance with regulatory guidelines. The Educator oversees quality and infection control initiatives for CSP. The Educator provides a comprehensive and technical orientation, education, and training program for Central Sterile Processing as well as any other unit staff member performing cleaning, assembly, HLD and/or sterilization. The Educator performs regular quality audits to ensure processes and standards are being followed.

     

     

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

     

    1 Participates and collaborates in the annual development of an education/learning needs assessment for the department of Central Sterile Processing and other ancillary units performing cleaning, assembly, HLD and/or sterilization.

    2 Conducts learning needs assessment using a variety of strategic tools. Provides educational programs and curricula for the CSP staff as identified from education/learning needs assessment.

    3 In conjunction with department managers, develops, implements and validates competencies for Sterile Processing Technicians (I, II, III), Supervisors, and Equipment Techs as applicable for each department.

    4 In conjunction with department managers, develops and maintains policies, procedures and standard work regarding cleaning, assembly, HLD and/or sterilization in Central Sterile Processing and other ancillary units based on current standards and regulations.

    5 Assists with house wide or department orientation of new equipment, instrumentation, updates to Joint Commission, updates to AAMI standards and other items as necessary. Teaches content as needed or assigned within clinical expertise to facilitate orientation, staff development and/or safe clinical practice.

    6 Meets with preceptors and orientees on a regular basis to monitor orientation progress and assist in setting goals for orientee in collaboration with preceptor and manager. Verifies orientation content is appropriate for achieving role independence.

    7 Oversees the training and orientation of new employees and maintains documentation as required. May be required to perform the role of a preceptor as needed.

    8 Routinely meets with CSP Manager to identify staff or department educational needs. Develops/revises educational plan(s) accordingly to assure ongoing competency and validation of practice.

    9 Audits the CSP department and ancillary units’ processes and records for quality assurance in accordance with departmental and facility policy, The Joint Commission, CDC, FDA, AAMI, OSHA, DNV and DOH regulations.

    10 Assists with tracking and documenting staff education requirements and facilitates/mentors staff in meeting department requirements.

    11 Demonstrates leadership and collaborative management skills and effective verbal and written communication skills, including documentation, communication and presentation.

    12 Performs in a technician capacity as needed.

    DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:

    York Hospital central sterile processing (CSP) department provides vital support via all aspects of surgical procedures. CSP is responsible for knowing, reprocessing and managing all of the instruments and sterilization methods used in order to support a 19 suite operating room, a 2-room vascular suite, 4-room cardiac catheterization suite and the obstetric surgical arenas. The department also maintains records associated with high level disinfection (HLD) of endoscopes for non-invasive cardiology along with instrument reprocessing for over 30 outlying surgical practices.

    MINIMUM EDUCATION:

     

    Bachelor's Degree

     

     

    MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:

     

    3 - 5 years of experience in Central Sterile Processing in a leadership / supervisory capacity.

     

     

    PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

     

    Previous teaching experience; teaching and learning strategies, learning styles, curriculum and design

     

     

    REQUIRED CERT/REGISTRATION:

     

    Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST ) certification
