    About the opportunity : As a member of the Health Equity/Access & Improvement team, you will be responsible for successfully collaborating and managing the execution of rural community-wide health and well-being improvement initiatives. Using data-driven research and analysis, you will work with a team of partner organizations to assist selected rural Iowa and South Dakota communities needing impactful health improvement interventions. You will assist these communities in identifying drivers of health, including social determinants that are causing poor health outcomes for their residents. You will leverage your community health expertise to aid communities in building a master plan comprised of evidence-based solutions that address health issues and consult with the community as they work to engage the community and implement these items. In conjunction with community organizations and volunteers, you will track and measure outcomes relative to implemented initiatives.

    Required:

    • Bachelor's degree or direct and applicable work experience.
    • 5+ years of related experience in both working with community leaders to develop strategies to improve the health of citizens which includes curating and engaging a volunteer network, as well as in partnering with key stakeholders (e.g., local government, business leaders, chambers, associations) and working with groups of volunteers to achieve goals.
    • Ability to navigate local government approval or public processes.
    • Effective abilities in building local coalitions and guiding successful project implementation to meet shared goals in a community.
    • Strong ability to influence and solicit cooperation from community and organizational stakeholders. Must be able to understand the needs of others, ask meaningful questions, and distill information into actionable solutions based on the unique attributes of the community.
    • Critical thinking skills and the ability to steer a live conversation to an appropriate outcome.
    • Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to cultivate and manage key relationships. Professional, polished, and diplomatic in approach.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills to articulate accurate information to the public and stakeholders, including key decision makers and diverse audiences.
    • Ability to command an audience to listen with interest.
    • Ability to find, understand, interpret, and present community data to help stakeholders pick the most meaningful and impactful health solutions.
    • Self-starter and can work proactively and independently. Adaptable and flexible with changing priorities.
    • Works strategically. Ability to work with team members to support multiple communities to achieve short and long-term goals.
    • Valid driver’s license. Up to 50% same day travel required.

    Preferred:

    • Master’s degree in related field.
    • Knowledge of evidence-based community health interventions, social service systems, health education, community planning, and motivational psychology.
    • Experience with local economic development.
    • Application of behavioral economic and/or understanding of concepts of sociology.
    • Experience working on issues related to health equity and rural health.

    Additional Information

    Job Responsibilities:

    a. Community Subject Matter Expert/Consultant - Serve as a community health improvement subject matter resource for select communities. Consult and influence community leaders by utilizing data to identify the biggest barriers to health and health equity. Facilitate, design, and implement evidence-based solutions to address health improvement. Collaborate with state level partners to utilize and adopt an evidence-based assessment framework to evaluate community strengths, weaknesses, and preparedness. Responsible for managing the process of community-wide well-being improvement plans.

    b. Impactful Consultation – Collaborate with state level partners to consult and support chosen Iowa and South Dakota communities to identify opportunities that will lead to improved community-wide well-being improvement plans and more equitable health outcomes and better health for all citizens. Engage community leaders and connect individuals, organizations, and ideas. Consult to aid the implementation of interventions that will create sustainable and meaningful impacts on health equity and improvement. Develop positive working relationships with state and regional level partners and service providers and community leaders (local leadership, government, schools, and employers) to influence the adoption of recommended interventions. Influence work through volunteers within the community; coach and plan activities and events with individual community leadership.

    c. Data-driven Planning -Responsible for analysis and interpretation of community health-related data to identify evidence-based solutions geared toward improving health equity and overall community well-being. Work with state level partners to measure and interpret initiative outcomes and effectiveness. Provide ongoing evaluation of services and initiatives and make recommendations to enhance statewide initiative offerings.

    d. Knowledge - Maintain knowledge of current evidence-based practices for community health improvement and equity initiatives. Utilize industry best practices/knowledge base to navigate and expand community health improvement toolkit offerings and delivery. Understand local, regional, state, and national funding and policy approval processes and assist communities to navigate.

    e. Educate - Provide educational opportunities through coordination of internal and external subject matter experts on community-based initiatives to improve well-being. May assist with and/or facilitate community educational initiatives. Develop approaches for communities to sustainably educate and engage citizens to engage in healthy behaviors.

    f. Communicate - Collaborate with internal and external partners, as needed, in the development and implementation of marketing, promotional and communication pieces for the community. Work as a team with state level partners and Health Equity, Access & Improvement division peer(s) to assist selected communities with health equity initiatives, conduct research, and measure progress and ensure consistency of Wellmark message, product, and services.

    g. Represent - Serve as a representative of Wellmark within the community. This may include speaking at local community events and organizations, participating in community events, facilitating community meetings, and projecting a positive image of Wellmark and the partner organization’s message.
