    Location: Hybrid/Office – 86th Street and/or 180th Street offices (when opened) – negotiable with minimum of 2 days in our facilities

    About WSCAH:

    West Side Campaign Against Hunger (WSCAH)—established in 1979 and one of the largest and most successful food pantries in New York City—provides emergency food assistance and supportive services, including access to benefits like Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), to low-income New York families. West Side Campaign Against Hunger's mission is to alleviate hunger by ensuring all New Yorkers have access with dignity to a choice of healthy food and supportive services.

    Position Overview:

    The Controller is responsible for WSCAH's accounting and financial activities to ensure the financial health and long‐term sustainability of our growing anti-hunger organization. The Controller will maintain and continuously improve the systems of financial control and reporting, including general accounting, budget, banking, payroll and benefits processing. This is a high-growth and leadership position. From a financial perspective, WSCAH has nearly tripled our operating revenues and expenses over the last three fiscal years, embarked upon a $10 Million capital campaign, signed a 20-year lease for new operations space in Washington Heights for occupancy in Fall 2023 (construction is on-going). We are looking for someone to bring our financial process and capabilities to the next level through optimizing our financial technology infrastructure and continuing our emphasis on organizational business partnership through data and insights.

    Key areas of responsibility will include:

    Accounting/Finance Management

    • Serve as accounting and finance business partner for West Side Campaign Against Hunger in collaboration with the CFPO to ensure company financial plans are executed.
    • Direct and manage end-to-end outsourced transactional accounting process/provider to ensure timely financial statement reporting including disbursements/payables (such as grants and payroll), receivables (such as donor pledges, billings, and cash receipts), and general ledger transactions are monitored, recorded, and reported on in a timely and accurate manner
    • Drives timely close of monthly accounting activity and assures accurate account reconciliations are completed according to departmental procedures, generally accepted accounting principles and accepted timeframes.
    • Ensures effective use of data and technologies by our staff that helps execute our mission through the ownership of technology/data governance over our financial infrastructure (Sage Intacct, Bill.com, Tallie Expense, Bank Modules, EveryAction, Salesforce, Excel)
    • Closely monitor cash flow and develop recommendations to assure adequate operating capital is available to support projected performance, including evaluation and suggested improvements to key business drivers that directly impact cash flow.
    • Establishes strong working relationships and interacts with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, including WSCAH Employees/Leadership, private and government funders as well as vendors and our outsourced accounting firm;
    • Manages independent audits, tax, and grant reporting processes. Interface directly with independent auditors to ensure clear, timely communications. Prepares and/or directs the preparation of requested documentation to include preparation of comparative annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and the related notes to the financial statements have been appropriately updated. Support other audits as requested.
    • Provide the external tax preparer with all the information required to prepare the organization's IRS Form 990 and other corporate taxes, and timely filing of these taxes with the IRS and other governmental agencies.
    • Establishes systems to assure effective implementation of all fundraising operations that interface with accounting. Work with Development staff to monitor disbursements, complying with funding resource requirements and policies.
    • Develop and maintain departmental and project‐based financial reports and review them with department managers to enable them to effectively manage their activities and understand how they impact overall operations.
    • Prepare and oversee ad hoc government and private grant/donor reporting.

    Payroll/Employee Benefits Administration

    • Review bi‐weekly payroll through ADP – serve as backup for submission and entry
    • Oversee administration and access for ADP Totalsource Portal for Staff
    • Coordinate and review annual benefit enrollment/process in consultation with HR
    • Oversee and serve as administrator of WSCAH's 403b retirement plan including contribution submission, annual testing requirements, and plan compliance.
    • Responsible for reviewing legislation and rules from ADP and various government sources (IRS, NYS, NYC) to ensure organizational payroll, benefit, and human resource compliance with laws and regulations

    Organizational Leadership

    • Establish standards and controls as needed to mitigate financial risk and promote stewardship and financial accountability throughout the organization. Provide training/guidance/resources as needed for employees and explore how the finance team can support internal stakeholders and/or business partners.
    • Collaborate with WSCAH staff to ensure the effective use of data, software and other technology - Identifies problems/opportunities and innovatively create and implement improvements to business policy, financial controls, workflow efficiency.
    • Attend team and all‐staff meetings

    Qualifications:

    ● Bachelor's degree required, Accounting or Finance preferred. CPA or equivalent would be ideal.
    ● Minimum of six years relevant accounting or finance experience, including staff supervision; not‐for‐profit preferred.
    ● Experience managing general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable and banking technologies/procedures in a growing organization setting and leading external audits.
    ● Experience developing and utilizing financial and operating metrics and performance reports to guide organizational decisions.
