    JOB DESCRIPTION

    JOB TITLE:       SUCCESS MENTOR DEPARTMENT: YOUTH SERVICES REPORTS TO:   COMMUNITY SCHOOL DIRECTOR  

    OVERVIEW: Under the supervision of a Community School Director, Success Mentors will work with chronically absent youth to address the barriers keeping them from going to school every day and to help them reach their educational outcomes. They will help to identify the causes of poor attendance, which may include family struggles or poor health, and work with DOE staff to seek solutions. Success Mentors will also work directly with groups of youth, lead activities, classroom push-ins, home visits, and organize events in connection with the Renewal Hour and after-school programming.  

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    •  Mentors will have a caseload of 15-20 youth and are matched with their mentees for a full year.
    •  Meet and greet matched youth each morning/afternoon when they arrive at school or program site;
    • make early morning phone calls to absent students.
    •  Track attendance and celebrate improvements.
    • Meet with mentees regularly, both one-one and in small groups, to check in on how school is going
    • and listen to youth’s needs.
    •  Classroom push-ins to support behavioral management.
    •  Work with school and site leadership to identify appropriate interventions to support and engage the mentees.
    •  Seek advice and identify targeted sources of youth or family supports from appropriate school staff and community-based partners under the direction of the Community School Director.
    •  Keep notes about youth attendance patterns, needs and interventions-make sure monitoring of data is strategic.
    • Attend (or be represented at) weekly/bi-weekly student success meetings to share any best practices or challenges and to present a summary of how youth are doing.
    •  When working with groups of youth, develop and maintain an effective system of classroom management that encourages children to develop pro-social behavior and self-discipline.
    • Communicate regularly with Community School Director or other designated personnel regarding needs and supplies to support youth.
    •  Provide one-on-one tutoring support or small-group instruction daily for one classroom.
    •  Support classroom management, instruction, hall support, lunch support, and event planning during school day.
    • Other related tasks as needed

       

    QUALIFICATIONS:  2 years of higher education in the fields of Social Services, Psychology, Education or related field required OR active college student/some college coursework completed and a minimum of 2 years or more equivalent job-related experience. At least 2 years of experience in facilitating elementary aged and adolescent’s groups. Must demonstrate the interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with designated staff, DOE professionals, scholars, and their families during periods of emotional stress. Must have experience in cultural competency practices with diverse populations. Must be able to develop an understanding of the socio-demographic characteristics, behavior patterns, and service needs of specific populations. Strong commitment and motivation to assist in achieving goals centered around Core Values. Prior experience as a facilitator in an after-school setting highly desirable.Bilingual professionals preferred. All members must be approved to work in DOE school as determined by Department of Health and/or Department of Education through an FBI criminal background check. Potential members must be clear of any sexual offense charges as determined through an online check of the National Sex Offender Registry.
