    ASSISTANT RESEARCH TECHNICIAN – LEMPRADL LAB

     

    Van Andel Institute is a leading independent biomedical research facility dedicated to determining the epigenetic, genetic, molecular and cellular origins of cancer, Parkinson’s and other diseases, and translating those findings into effective therapies. The Institute is home to more than 400 scientists and support staff that work in on-site laboratories and in collaborative partnerships that span the globe.

     

    The Lempradl Lab is seeking to hire a PART-TIME ASSISTANT RESEARCH TECHNICIAN (10-20 hours/week).  The lab focuses on non-genetic inheritance of nutritional states.

    • NON-GENETIC INHERITANCE: Enhance our understanding of molecular mechanisms of phenotype transmission from parent to offspring
    • EPIGENETICS AND METABOLISM: Studying the interplay of epigenetics and metabolism, with a focus on the heritable effects of normal phenotypes and disease
    • INTERGENERATIONAL TOXICOLOGY: systematically map the heritable consequences of parental exposure to environmental toxins.
    • PREVENTATIVE MEASURES: finding strategies to prevent transmission of such phenotypes to the next generation.

     QUALIFICATIONS

    • Interest in biological sciences, biochemistry or molecular biology
    • Ability to record and manage data files and coordinate assignments on a day-to-day basis.
    • A hardworking individual with good time management skills and the ability to work independently
    • Good oral and written communication skills
    • Excellent organizational skills

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Drosophila food preparation and vial cleaning
    • Documentation and record keeping of above completed tasks
    • Based on performance and lab needs additional training may be provided: Drosophila phenotyping assays, genetic crosses, and stock maintenance
    • This position is part-time and will require two full-days of work in the lab. Based on performance and lab needs, there may be opportunities for additional hours in the future.

    Required Skills

    Ability to adapt quickly to multiple tasks as well as solving arithmetic problems.  Demonstrated ability to handle routine problems on an independent basis.  Experience with understanding and properly performing, recognizing and recording established experimental procedures.  Ability to independently prioritize to effectively execute tasks with minimal supervision.

    Required Experience

    Bachelor's degree or equivalent and 0-2 years of science related experience.
