  • Responsibilities

    FULL-TIME, DAY SHIFT, 40 HOURS PER WEEK, MONDAY-FRIDAY, 7:30AM-4:00PM

     

    SUMMARY:

    Supervises and coordinates the activities of employees engaged in collection, processing, and performing automated and manual clinical diagnostic tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases.  Serves as a technical resource person for other technologists, technicians and support personnel. Provides logistical leadership and training to all team members. Works under the general supervision and the technical guidance of the Manager.

     

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

    1. Demonstrates the ability to perform all duties and responsibilities of those supervised. Fulfills the function of general supervisor for regulatory requirements and provides 24/7 rotating on call coverage.
    2.  Monitors work activities to improve efficiency. Evaluates specimen collection, processing, and testing to ensure quality/integrity under general supervision of the manager.
    3.  Responsible for the collection, processing, accessioning and waived testing of blood, urine and other samples from Patient Service Centers (PSC’s) and other collection sites including nursing homes, state institutions, patient’s homes and other client locations.
    4.  Supervises departmental activities/staffing assignments/schedules and staff meetings to maintain a high quality of work. Monitors work activities to improve efficiency. Takes corrective action when necessary to redirect activities and to correct problems.
    5.  Performs specialized and technically demanding tests that require high level of expertise and reports tests results.
    6.  Directs the proper storage of hazardous materials and the laboratory safety program in conjunction with the safety officer.
    7.  Troubleshoots instrumentation and test methods and makes decisions regarding action to be taken.
    8.  Reviews quality control data as well as evaluates specimen collection/processing to ensure quality/integrity under general supervision of the manager; recognizes and resolves problems. Communicates problems and actions to the appropriate member(s) of management (if applicable). Plans, designs, and implements installation of new or improved laboratory techniques in conjunction with division management.
    9.  Establishes standards, normal values, and methods of control for each laboratory test performed in accordance with regulatory and accrediting agencies and in conjunction with clinical/medical leadership. Reviews current literature to keep informed of new developments in the field
    10. Coordinates and conducts education and training programs for personnel. Develops training/competency checklists and provides clinical orientation and/or training of new employees/students. Supports Education Department personnel/trainers and/or designee in the training/orientation of new staff members.
    11.  Develops and maintains department Standard Operating Procedures according to CLSI guidelines as appropriate.
    12. Plans for effective utilization of resources (space, time, personnel, budget and equipment). Maintains an accurate workload recording system and prepares productivity reports as requested. Evaluates and adjusts workload using the data.
    13.  Actively participates in the Continuous System Improvement (CSI) and continuing education programs.
    14.  Coordinates new business with the Sales Department

    Must meet CLIA 88 personnel requirements for high complexity testing (where applicable) and qualify as a general supervisor.

     

    Language Ability:

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.  Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.  Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

     

    Math Ability:

    Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

     

    Reasoning Ability:

    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

     

    Computer Skills:

    Word processing, Spreadsheets, E-mail

     

    Certificates and Licenses:

    Certification by a recognized certifying agency for clinical laboratory professionals preferred (ASCP, ASMT, NCA, etc.).Must actively demonstrate the pursuance of specialty certification in chosen field of clinical expertise.
