Vessel Mate Required Qualifications:
- Must possess a Mate’s Endorsement 200 GRT or greater
- STCW Complaint, OC Endorsements are preferred but not required in all circumstances
- A valid USCG - 719K Medical Certificate
- A valid Passport (preferred but not required)
- A valid TWIC Card
Position Summary for Vessel Mates:
- University Graduates and Trade Schools are preferred but not required.

- Play an active role in safety meetings
- Ensure good housekeeping practices are maintained
- Ensure that subordinates understand their roles posted on the Station Bill
- Report all incidents, and potential hazards to supervisors
Duties:
- Exercise safe practices for vessel navigation at all times
- Be familiar with the vessel navigation equipment
- Assist with voyage planning
- Provide assistance to the master as requested
- Ensure vessel navigational equipment is tested and functional
- Ensure proper maintenance of deck equipment
- Ensure proper maintenance of firefighting and lifesaving equipment
- Ensure the watertight integrity of the vessel
- Develop and train crew members to ensure they are competent and capable
- Provide leadership and motivation to vessel crews
- Promote an atmosphere of continuous improvement
- Apply conservative and appropriate language during professional conversation
