    Position Summary:

    Under general supervision, provides a variety of electrical/mechanical inspection, testing and maintenance procedures on high voltage substation equipment under the jurisdiction of the Manager responsible for substation operations. Approves proper installation of protective power equipment and their schemes to achieve engineering design requirements within transmission, generation, and distribution substations. Coordinates with other departments for accurate completion of new construction and rework projects. Assists all areas with projects requiring additional manpower and expertise. Provides income for OG&E by outsourcing power equipment expertise and skills to external customers.

    Primary Duties:

    • Members in the apprentice program perform duties related to the craft and consistent with their achieved level within the program which may include:
    • Performs internal and external inspection and testing of various types of substation power equipment such as transformers, regulators, circuit breakers and reclosers, and disconnect switches.: Tests, inspects, adjusts, repairs, or replaces various components including contacts, motors, pumps, relays, mechanical linkage, arc interrupters, etc.; Sets up and performs various mechanical tests including circuit breaker motion analyzer tests, transformer load tap changer operational tests, etc.; Records and analyzes the results to identify existing or potential malfunctions; Performs vacuum procedures utilizing oil processing equipment and SF-6 gas reclaiming equipment.
    • Assembles substation equipment and performs acceptance inspections of new equipment including accessories: Verifies equipment adjustments and operating parameters to be as specified by OG+E and the manufacturer; Inspects and installs equipment wiring and components to be as specified in OG+E design drawings; Reads OG+E and Manufacturer prints, drawings and schematics; Determines if equipment is suitable for service.
    • Performs a variety of electrical testing procedures on various power equipment at power plants, transmission and distribution substations: Isolates, grounds and otherwise prepares equipment for testing per OG+E Standard Operating Practices (SOPs); Performs applicable tests on equipment and/or components including power factor tests of insulation and bushings, ratio and polarity tests of current transformers, dielectric tests of oil, etc.; Records and analyzes all test results to identify existing and/or potential deficiencies.
    • Practices and assures safe work methods regarding maintenance, testing and inspection procedures.
    • Ensures personnel are protected according to company safe work practices and procedures: Maintains a stock of supplies for mobile work van and work vehicles; Ensures test equipment and tools are properly used, stored and maintained; Operates forklifts to load/unload material and hydra lifts and basket trucks during installation, maintenance and testing procedures.
    • Serves as first responder to substation equipment malfunctions including telecommunication and SCADA problems.
    • Performs emergency switching and work procedures during storms and outages.
    • Assists in the development and training of apprentice technicians and trainees.
    • Provides training for peer technicians upon request.
    • Performs maintenance and operational tests on Power Supply protective power equipment and switches as needed or when requested.
    • Maintains a complete and accurate file of the area's substations regarding prints, records and reports.
    • Stays current on pertinent technologies through continuous education.
    • Assumes coverage duties for Supervisor, as needed.
    • Prepares and executes error-free switching for normal test and maintenance, emergency repair, service restoration and operates switches in a safe and professional manner.
    • Maintains required records and reports as delegated by the supervisor.

    Requirements:

    • Associate's Degree or higher in a technical discipline; Or
    • Completion of a Vo-Tech program in an electrical/Mechanical field; Or
    • Prior military experience at the journey level or one enlistment completed with DD Form 214 Discharge Papers and Separation Documents; Or
    • High School Diploma/GED And 2 years experience in a mechanical/electrical field (e.g., substation construction, relay, inspection, industrialized mechanical etc.). Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with DOT certification required within 180 days.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Class A CDL preferred

    • Knowledge and understanding of safety requirements and the use of personal protective equipment.
    • Knowledge of basic math.

    Working Conditions:

    • Performs coverage duties of a Foreman, as needed.
    • May be exposed to extreme conditions and inclement weather.
    • Work is performed in an outside environment with considerable exposure to extreme heat and cold.
    • Work is performed from ladders and above the ground level to exceed 30 feet.
    • May be required to work non-standard work schedules to including overtime, weekends, holidays, on-call and call-outs.
    • Required to participate in on-call rotation schedule with other department member (approximately every 8 weeks).
    • Maintains or obtain all required certifications (e.g., Switching).
    • Required to work away from home for extended periods, as needed, with overnight stay (could exceed 7 days).
    • May be required to work in a multi-craft crew.
    • May be required to cross-train in various crafts and operation department at various times of the year.
