GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the direction and supervision of the Director of Nursing, the Staff Development Coordinator assists in organizing and administration of the nursing department. Assumes responsibilities delegated by the Director of Nursing and assumes duties of Director/ADON in his/her absence.
The RN Staff Development Coordinator is also responsible for the organization and implementation of new employees' orientation and clinical competency; continued clinical competency, general in-service, and staff development in accordance with staff development and in-service training policies.
The RN Staff Development Coordinator must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served by his/her department—adolescent through geriatric. The RN Staff Development Coordinator must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span; possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status; interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to the populations served by the hospital; and to provide the care needed as described in the Nursing Department's policies and procedures.
The RN Staff Development Coordinator must be able to perform all functions of a registered nurse within the scope of practice as outlined by the regulatory agencies such as the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing and the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
The RN Staff Development Coordinator must be able to deliver nursing care according to the standards of care as outlined by the various associations such as Pennsylvania Nurses Association (PNA), and the American Nurses Association Standards of Clinical Practice.
EDUCATION:
Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program required.
Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing preferred.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of five (5) years satisfactory experience as an RN preferred.
Minimum of three (3) years experience in a long term care/management setting required.
Minimum of one (1) year nursing education experience required.
Assists in the responsibility for the 24-hour management of the Nursing Department.
Assists with investigation, recording and follow through of all incidents, accidents and variance reports
Performs all duties and function of a Registered Nurse. Assess resident conditions and nursing needs and prescribes appropriate nursing action in crisis situations. Directs maintenance of resident care records.
Assists with formulating departmental policies and procedures. Assists in evaluating nursing and related service rendered to improve quality of patient care.
Develops, implements, and coordinates the Orientation Program including instruction and supervision of new employees in the clinical settings. This program must equip the learner with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to function in accordance with job duties and responsibilities within the long term care setting. Maintains comprehensive summaries/ evaluations of new employee’s performance. Reviews pertinent policies and procedures and outlines class requirements and objectives.
Designs, organizes, implements, and evaluates educational offerings/ inservices to increase competence in specific areas of practice, such as training in use of new equipment, review of policies and procedures required for the learner to function within a specific setting. These are based upon adult learning principles, current nursing theory, and the standards of long term care nursing practice. Assesses initial and ongoing learning needs
Assumes responsibilities as a self-directed professional for continuing education to maintain current knowledge in nursing practice through independent study and education programs based upon individual identified needs and licensure and certification requirements.

Instructs hospital personnel in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.
Establishes and maintains guidelines for experienced nursing personnel to act as preceptors to assist in the orientation of new employees
Participates in hospital performance improvement. Uses Quality Assurance techniques to evaluate the effectiveness of educational activities.
Participates with the Nursing Management team utilizing current evidence based practice, best practice models and Standards of Care for establishment and revisions of policies and procedures.
Coordinates student affiliations/orientation.
Functions on various committees of facility wide programs. Participates in conferences and staff meetings. Participates in QAPI program activities.
through direct observation, formal needs assessment, and performance improvement reports.
Prepares and delivers education programs in accordance with state, federal and related compliance requirements, like OSHA. (E)
Assists in maintaining a system which indicates credentials, qualifications, experience, and accomplishments of each member of the Nursing Department. Maintains personnel education records, including orientation, initial and ongoing competencies, in-services, and conference attendance.
Is the administrator of the nurse aide training program. Keeps roll and attendance book and maintains comprehensive summaries of program content for all in-service education. Initiates, completes and maintains records including skills check list, individual in service records, and registration form for state testing, roster of course completion, certification of completion, course evaluation, and final exam and student performance evaluations.
