    Reports to: Presenting Officer

    Salary (Grade): $14.50/hr

    Status: Reg. Full-Time (Non-Exempt)

    Location: Winnebago Tribal Court, Winnebago NE 68071

    Job Purpose & Position Overview

    Under the direction of the Presenting Officer, serves as liaison to tribal members in child abuse, neglect and sexual abuse cases, and provides legal research and clerical assistance to Presenting Officer.

    Specific Job Duties/Responsibilities:

    Demonstrates the Winnebago Tribe’s core mission, vision, and values

    Attend all court proceedings, take comprehensive notes, and draft all court orders or other required legal documents from said proceedings

    Receive, catalog, file and disseminate all legal correspondence

    Accurately maintain court calendar

    Retrieve documents as requested

    Coordinate and perform legal research

    Gather and analyze research data, such as statutes, decisions, and legal articles, codes and documents

    With presenting officer, draft, proofread and check petitions, documents and correspondence for accuracy

    Prepare reports, correspondence, declarations, affidavits and other legal documents as necessary

    Organize and maintain legal files and documents in paper or electronic form using Fastlaw

    Assist the Presenting Officer in preparing for trial by performing tasks such as preparing subpoenas and organizing exhibits

    Assist the Presenting Officer in filing pleadings with court, file and coordinate/monitor the service of all orders/documents to the court and the necessary parties

    Assist the Presenting Officer in investigating facts of cases and search pertinent sources

    Phone and schedule witnesses to testify at hearings

    Maintain Presenting Officer court calendars

    Screens calls, visitors, and mail and routes accordingly.

    Required Qualifications/Skills:

    Bachelor's Degree or Associate's Degree with Paralegal/Legal Secretary certification preferred. Will consider candidates with equivalent relevant legal experience; Familiarity with the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) and experience with programs or operations in the Social Services fields a plus.

    Physical Requirements:

    Normal office work which includes the ability to lift up to 10 lbs.

    Regularly required to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods of time and use hands to operate computer keyboard, phone, and various office equipment.

    While performing daily duties, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.

    Mental Requirements:

    Reading, writing, calculating

    Above average social interaction skills

    Reasoning/Analysis

    Works with minimal to no supervision

    Language Requirements:

    Must possess the ability to read, write, and speak the English language fluently.

    Must be able to continually and effectively employ professional verbal and written communications skills.

    All applicants will comply with 45 CFR 1301, Subpart D, Section 1301.31, C and D, which require all prospective employees to sign a declaration prior to employment regarding all arrests and convictions of child abuse or violent felonies and to comply with PL 101-630 and PL 101-637 regarding criminal records check.
