    Peninsula Community Center, a ministry of Peninsula Covenant Church (PCC), builds community by providing personal, healthy and meaningful connection through aquatics, fitness, tennis and community programming. PCC is a vibrant and forward-thinking church located in Redwood City, dedicated to serving our community and making a positive impact through our outreach programs including our Community Center. PCC employs over 150 seasonal and part-time staff to support various community efforts.     PRINCIPAL OBJECTIVE The Swim Coach leads and develops youth swimmers by providing high-quality instruction, promoting physical fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship, and fostering a love of swimming in a safe and supportive environment.

    PRINCIPAL WORKING RELATIONSHIP This position reports to the Swim Team Supervisor and works closely with the Aquatics Coordinator, Aquatics Director and other aquatics staff. The Swim Coach will also engage with swimmers, parents, and Peninsula Covenant Church (PCC) members, ensuring a positive and encouraging team environment. Collaboration with all Center staff is essential to maintaining a high-quality aquatics program and facility.

    WORKWEEK

    Commit to being available on the weekday afternoons in which your groups are swimming. Swim Team hours are Monday-Thursday 4:30-7:45pm and Friday 4:30-6:30pm.

    Attend all required training meetings and team events.

    Hours and shifts vary, Weekly hours range: 2-8 hours.

    SUMMARY OF KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Develop and lead assigned swim practices in alignment with PCC Swim Team guidelines and seasonal goals.

    Support swim meet and swim team event operations, including meet setup, swimmer supervision, and – as assigned.

    Maintain accurate attendance and communicate swimmer progress, concerns, or notable issues to the Swim Team Supervisor or Aquatics Director as needed.

    Follow all facility policies, safety standards, and the Emergency Action Plan (EAP) during practices and events.

    Arrive prepared and on time for all scheduled shifts, practices, meets, and required training.

    Communicate scheduling changes early, secure appropriate substitute coverage when unable to work a scheduled shift and assist with coverage when available.

    Represent PCC Swim Team professionally and collaborate with all aquatics and Center staff to provide excellent service to members and guests and contribute to a thriving aquatics program.

    PROFILE SKILLS AND CORE COMPETENCIES

    Strong swim coaching and instructional skills, with the ability to design engaging, developmentally appropriate practices for youth swimmers.

    Positive leadership style that promotes teamwork, sportsmanship, and a supportive team culture.

    Clear and professional communication skills when interacting with swimmers, parents, and aquatics staff.

    Dependable and accountable, with the ability to manage responsibilities independently and follow through on commitments.

    Ability to adapt instruction to meet the needs of swimmers with varying abilities and experience levels.

    Calm and attentive in a pool environment, with the ability to follow safety protocols and respond appropriately to on-deck situations.

    EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION

    American Red Cross Lifeguard certification required.

    Must be at least 15 years old with strong swimming skills.

    Prior swim team coaching and swim instructor experience preferred.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    Must be in the water and sun for extended periods.

    Must be able to hold children (ages 3-12) in the water, stand in the water, swim 300 yards continuously (breaststroke or freestyle), and tread water for two minutes without using arms.

    Must be able to perform all American Red Cross Lifeguard rescue skills, including but not limited to diving up to 12 feet, treading water for extended periods, CPR, rescue breathing, in-water spinal backboarding, and using an AED.

    Must be able to lift 30 pounds occasionally and 15-20 pounds frequently.

    DOJ background clearance required.

    Must adhere to and model PCC’s Safe Church policies.
